Based in New York City... all acoustic, all the time. Urban Cathedral is greatly influenced by the folk movement of the 1960s, but also create their own unique edge by reinterpreting such indie favorites as The Magnetic Fields and Bjork. Playing both unexpected arrangements of familiar tunes, and original songs by group members, this retro-progressive folk/pop trio is fast becoming a must hear on the New York music scene.
The Boston Globe calls lead vocalist Diana Kazakova's singing, "hauntingly beautiful and affecting." Diana is the founding singer of "The Bjorkestra", an 18 piece big band reinterpretation of Bjork's music which took the NYC music scene by storm. She brings it full circle on this debut folk album and pares it back with a sparse three piece acoustic version of "Hyperballad"
Uniquely, each member is a singer/songwriter who brings their own songs to the band in order to explore the simple yet interesting textures created by three distinct voices, acoustic guitar and world percussion.
Between them, the members of Urban Cathedral have played all the major venues in NYC including Joe's Pub, The Knitting Factory, BAM, Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, The Living Room, The Producers Club, The Duplex, The Triad Theater and on Broadway.
Urban Cathedral plays around the city in various venues including The Underground Lounge, The Charlie Pineapple Theatre in Williamsburg, The Starlight Lounge in the East Village, The Rockwood Music Hall and The New Leaf Cafe. The band also held the coveted closing spot in the Governor's Island Outdoor Island to Island Music festival.
