A little less complication

About Me

I was born in a hurry of ordinary human parents, and raised almost vertically in a small town with terrible shopping options. Fortunately, after avoiding the school rugby team, military service, and countless jammy-faced offspring with a resentful girlfriend, I moved to York. Here, I now live in considerable bohemian splendour with my bestest mate who I had the good sense to marry. We generally pass our time talking nonsense, going shopping and enjoying the occassional day-trip. This rarefied existence is complemented by an elderly lakeland terrier, who is in fact the reincarnated heir to the displaced French monarchy. In turn I wish to be reincarnated as Swedish, living in the Gothenburg area with superb cheekbones and an extensive (flat-pack) wardrobe.I write stuff. All kinds of stuff. I’ve been published in a vast array of national and international magazines on all kinds of subjects including ; social justice, third world development, conservation, relationships, British history and travel, education, grassroots social movements, charities, ethical business, religious affairs and mental health. In 2003 I wrote a book about the history, culture and current situation of the Roma Gypsy peoples worldwide, imaginatively titled : Roma. You can still find a copy at the History Bookshop Dot Com if you’re interested. I’ve also been published as a poet and short-story writer. I started writing fiction with some serious intent at the end of 2006. This year I published my first novel, Take Me Out which is set here in York. My fiction writing is still very much a work in progress, but I’m learning and lots of people have said nice things about it. You can check it out for yourself : Take Me Out A BookYou can have a signed & dedicated copy delivered to your UK address for just £10 on the button below :If you're overseas it's £12 anywhere in the world on the button below : You can purchase a copy from :

When I'm not writing I'm reading voraciously, wandering around taking photos, walking about in the countryside, nodding my head to a dodgy indie band in a sweaty dive with beer soaked carpets, occassionally I go to the theatre and have been known to wander around an art gallery or two. I’m very laid back, take folk as I find them and try to enjoy life. I like people but dislike knee-jerk cynicism, intolerance, bigotry and judgemental know-it-alls. I think our short span on the planet should be about trying things, taking the knock-backs and triumphs with good humour and generosity, staying curious and doing your best to keep an open-mind.

My Interests

Reading and writing mainly followed by occasional other stuff. Principally being, walking up big hills, walking down big hills, walking about on areas of moderate incline and abundant greenery preferably with a view. Walking essentially. Continued membership of Britain’s heritage organisations, shopping, dancing in the kitchen, all things scandinavian, photography, current affairs and the like, cooking stuff , Dr Alice Roberts, history, theatre, contemporary art, running. I love getting out and exploring Britain, my fave bits of it being, Cornwall, The Highlands, Wales and Yorkshire (naturally). I drink endless cups of tea and coffee, I enjoy the occasional snack food and try my hardest to mind my own business.

I'd like to meet:

Traceyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura, Justine Frischmann,Nicky Wire, Tilda Swinton, Dr Alice Roberts. York people are always good. Nice folk from wherever. People who like books especially. People who are doing something interesting and different with their lives. You probably. Say hello if you feel like it. ..

Home made houmous, optimism, running

I think I would struggle to be more crappily middle-class than I found myself this afternoon. I was mixing up home-made houmous whilst listening to the play on Radio Four. It was very comforting. I ca...
