Welcome to our site! Bennie J. Smith aka 'Benny J' was born in Danville, KY and was raised simultaneously in Danville and Lexington. While growing up in the Charlotte Court housing projects, he developed his early interest in music while listening to the sounds of James Brown, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Supremes, Dionne Warwick, Marvin Gaye and The Beatles. He learned to play the alto saxophone at Edna L. Toliver Elementary School in Danville under the direction of Mr. William Gravely. By the age of 14, he played his first professional gig at the Old Boxing Ring in Lexington with neighborhood musicians. Later, he played with Lexington area bands, Touch of Funk, Vanishing Point (Nicholasville, KY), Spontaneous Combustion (now called 'Scandalous Band') and others.He played with The CALCULUS II Band, which was based in Cleveland, OH and RAZZ-MA-DAZZ Band of Lexington, KY. Between these two bands, he was on the same billing with national recording artists, 'ROGER TROUTMAN & ZAPP'..'THE DEELE with BABYFACE'..'READY FOR THE WORLD'..'BOBBI HUMPHREY'..'THE DAZZ BAND'..'ALEXANDER O'NEAL..'SHIRLEY MURDOCK'..'EVELYN CHAMPAGNE KING'..'INSTANT FUNK BAND'..'CHOCOLATE MILK BAND'..'SLAVE'..'S.O.S. BAND'..and 'MIDNIGHT STAR'... In 1994, he teamed up with longtime friend and former CALCULUS II BAND member Ronald E. Booth to launch a cd/cassette recording project entitled, "GET LIVE!!!" on their own RED DIAMOND RECORDS label with the group, 'BROTHERS OF STRUGGLE.' In 1996, he opened the "SUMMER SOULFEST" in Lexington, KY for 'CHANGING FACES' and in 2000, opened for world-renowned jazz saxophonist 'NAJEE' at the 'Jazz In Shawnee Park' Derby Weekend Celebration in Louisville, KY. Benny J. opened for 'ZAPP' at the 5th Annual Toyota Heritage Football Classic Concert in Lexington, KY in 2006.Benny J. was also a vocalist/saxophonist with Lexington-based 'THE TRENDELLS' for three years and was with 'GROUP THERAPY' before relocating to Charlotte, NC in to broaden his horizons in the entertainment arena and continues to perform with various musicians/vocalists under the 'BENNY J & FRIENDS' concept.
