Outrunning The Sun

Ten years in the making...............

About Me

After a ten year journey through the hinterlands of sub-underground psychedelia, Outrunning The Sun (formerly Elysian Fields & Inside the Pyramid to name but two incarnations) have reformed to produce some new material with the band now miraculously consisting of its original members. The road behind is littered with the corpses of the many contributors to the mission to stay one step ahead of the Sun, and thanks and salutations are due to all, but now the journey continues.

Formed in 1995 by Frank Flight & Dave Thornley, their vision was to create a unique blend of West Coast Psychedelic rock with progressive soundscapes. Throughout 1995/96 the search for like minded musicians was explored. Many were auditioned and discarded, until finally Danny Taylor, Bass Guitar & Dave Veres, Drums & Percussion, musicians with a similar vision took their place in the band.
Work started in 1996 and four tracks were recorded from improvisational and song based material. This lead to the band supporting Wishbone Ash in the Autumn of that year.
By 1997 the band were gigging extensively throughout the country, the reception contrasted wildly from ecstatic by the musically enlightened, to incomprehension by those fed constantly on a diet of cover bands and "safe music".
On their return from gigging in London, the band recruited Maurice Watson, whose stylish vocals, enthralling spoken word and overall stage presence gave the band another facet which elevated them to another level. Unfortunately the relentless gigging caused tensions in the band and Maurice left the band towards the end of that year. January 1998 saw co-founder member and guitarist Dave play his last gig. Replacements were drafted into the band with varying levels of success. Much of the old set was shelved and new material written, culminating in the recording of the debut album "Outrunning The Sun," at Aliensound Studios between August 1998 & March 1999. Gigging continued and the album attracted record company interest. But in the time honoured tradition of "shoot yourself in the foot" all were rejected by the band, for a fear of a loss of artistic control. This unfortunately hastened the demise of the band who played their last gig in March 2000. Bizarrely, but true to the strange twists and turns of the band Frank Flight & Dave Thornley joined forces once again in 2001, three years after their last collaboration and started to write new material. This "new beginning" resulted in all original members returning by late 2005. Sadly the reunion of the "classic" line up was short lived as Dave Veres left again in March 2006. However, new recordings went ahead between April & June this year with Terry Shaughnessy picking up the sticks for the recordings.
Don't look away or you may miss another chapter in the continuing story of Outrunning The Sun.

September 2006 Joyous news! Having previously last been spotted in the band at the end of 97, Matt Lovell has now rejoined the fold. Much singing in the street etc, etc
