DJ KID - Scotlands Drum & Bass Soldier

About Me

DJ Kid has remained Scotland’s most prolific figure within the UK Jungle Drum and Bass scene, and has for many years been regarded as Scotland’s leading Drum & Bass DJ. Without a shadow of a doubt, Kid’s contribution to the music’s development in Scotland is extremely significant, and without his continued efforts, it is questionable whether the Scottish Drum & Bass scene would have reached the heights it has. Through 18 years of hard work and sheer determination, Kid has elevated himself from a complete unknown to the well-respected DJ all over the world.Although Scotland is part of the UK it has always fallen way behind in the dance music stakes. Scotland has a number of quality Drum & Bass nights but the most revered and most talked about in the industry is Kid’s resident club night Manga which is not only Scotland's most successful event for the music but also stands proud as one of the longest running Drum & Bass night’s in the world. In January 2007 Manga celebrated 11 years of blasting Drum & Bass with another monster show which featured DJ Craze & MC Armanni TC & Jakes alongside sidekick and partner G Mac.Kid runs his own record label Restless Natives Records which since its launch in 2004 has seen 8 X 12 inch vinyl releases through Nu Urban Music as well as MP3 downloads through the likes of Beatport. The label is quite simply a platform for up and coming producers to show the world of DNB what they can do. The artists he has uncovered so far include DJ Kryptik and DJ Samurai who are now releasing on Andy C's sister labels Frequency and Hilite. Having discovered the talents of these two up & coming producers it wasn’t long before the label started to gain a reputation for releasing quality Drum & Bass music and with a variety of DJ’s including Grooverider, Andy C, DJ SS, in support and a subsquent front cover mix cd for Knowledge Magazine it wasnt long before Kid found himself inundated with up & coming producers eager for him to hear what they were doing in the studio. The first release by DJ Kryptik hit the streets back in January 2004 and sold 1000 copies. Both ’28 Days’ and ’New encounters’ received very good support throughout the world. The follow up on the label also by DJ Kryptik was smashed on dub by many of the scene's top dogz and was released in the shops in May 2004. After that 12 it was the turn of another newcomer by the name of DJ Samurai Featuring Charlotte. The tune is called “Dayz” and was released in October 2004. The 12 also features the first of many big name producers DJ Kid plans to bring into remix material on the label. Peshay one of the scenes true legends added his musical flavour to the mix and liked the outcome so much he licensed it from Kid to put as the first track on his ’Jammin’ album which came out at the end of 2004. The fifth release on the label was again from DJ Samurai ’Bizness’ and ’I Wanna Tell You’ which again featured the vocal talents of Charlotte was further proof that the talent he had discovered meant buisness. The sixth release was by new Kids on the block DC Breaks with ’Que Sera’ and ’Leave me’ both of which were well received by the masses. Around this time Andy C approached Kid in relation to a tune called ’Be Mine’ which was scheduled for release on the label. Kid's approach to this was that if bigger labels are going to come in for music from talent he has discovered then they should have it as he wants to see artists go onto bigger things as quickly as possible. The sixth release for the label was the follow up 12 by DC Breaks. 'Do You Believe' and 'Noize Dub' was released in February 2006 and to date has been the most successful release on the label, in some parts of the world it rivalled the likes of Pendulum on sales. Having done the mix cd for Knowledge Magazine which is distributed all over the world the interest for the label was really starting to build. At this time Kid was approached by MPK who is of Australia's longest serving Drum & Bass DJ who wanted to licence three tracks from the label for a forthcoming mixed compilation album called Winter Enchanted. The double album was released in 2005 featuring the VIP version of DJ Samurai & Charlotte ’Dayz’ alongside DC Breaks ’Que Sera’ and ’Do You Believe’. Number 7 on the label was again by DC breaks. Emperor & Horizon was another huge sucess for the label and proved that these guys were on the climb on the production stakes. After such a short space of time releasing material on Restless Natives the product just gets better and better and at the end of 2006 the 8th release dropped. DJ Mace of Planet Funk had remixed Samurai & Charlotte's I Wanna Tell You for the A Side and DJ Samurai who had since one the Drum & Bass Arena DJ competition got down on the remix tip off Dayz with a liquid esq VIP version which was never due for release on the flip. With the label fastly approaching the 9th and 10th release Kid has stepped back and is now concentrating on the design of the label website which will feature a fully functional shop where you will be able to buy anything from the lastest release's both on vinly, MP3 & Wav formats but also a whole range of limited edition merchandise.2007 looks set to be anothetr busy year for Kid and will see him start to establish himself as more of a production artist rather than just a DJ. He will launch his own imprint for his material Invade Recordings which has been in the pipeline for many moons but due to other commitments has never had the time to concentrate on fully.Over the last 13 years, DJ Kid has relayed as much of the best music to clubbers as he can. Smashing it wherever he plays, Kid keeps it moving with the latest test presses, regularly sent to him by all of the major labels. Kid always takes pride in mixing two tunes together - keeping it tight, at times chopping it up, and occasionally touching on some scratching. With his unpredictable and versatile style, Kid pushes as many different vibes as possible, always keeping it fresh, and throwing in a couple of classics for the pleasure of old and new Skool Drum & Bass headz alike. A legend in his own right, you can guarantee that as long as there is Drum & Bass music around, DJ Kid will be there pushing himself to new heights. For much more info on DJ Kid check his website WWW.DJKID.CO.UKYou can also check myspace.com/restlessnativesrecords
