I'm watching less Channel 10 and more SBS and ABC lately, a fact that makes me feel vaguely superior and smarter than I was before. If I had cable I'd probably be obsessed with the History Channel, so it's probably just as well that I don't. I think people who say "I don't watch TV" are pompous asses that have never learned to appreciate a great documentary or top-notch script.
William Faulkner, Saki, Haruki Murakami, Homer, Edward Gorey, Allen Ginsberg, Ray Bradbury, Dylan Thomas, John Donne, William Shakespeare, Halldor Laxness, John Julius Norwich, Ian Rankin, Walt Whitman, just to name a few. Anything that makes me work hard and lift my game. Currently reading a biography of that inscrutable bastard, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Oh, and when I'm taking a break from the hard stuff, I love Ann Rule's true crime schtickers.
Walt Whitman, who wrote: Love the earth and the animals, despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants... re-examine all you have been told in school or church or in any book, and dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem.
