Music:

Tom Waits, Muse, Okkervil River, Hitchcock's Regret, Mark Moldre and the Waiting Room, Michael Carpenter, The O'Neders, The Superhip, Eels, My Chemical Romance, Depeche Mode / Dave Gahan, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Bill Withers, Radiohead / Thom Yorke, Son House, Bernie Hayes, Suede, Morrissey, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, The Exploders, The Watermarks, Nine Inch Nails, Nick Cave, Willie Dixon, Ella Fitzgerald, The Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, David Bowie, The Dictators, iOTA, The Pixies, Voxtrot, The Ramones, Soul Coughing, RatCat, The New York Dolls, Ma Rainey, Elvis Costello, Lazy Susan, Freeway, Raymond Scott, The Badloves, The Kills, Jak Housden, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, The Hands, MGF, 50 Kaitens, Bryan FerrySexual, Pinky Beecroft, Mach Pelican, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Red Riders, Elliott Smith, The Lovetones, The King Brothers, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Jarvis Cocker, The Datsuns, Something With Numbers, Wilco, Tobias Froberg, The Guillemots, Son Volt, Wilco, 67 Special, Bob Dylan, The Decemberists, The Postal Service, Kings of Leon, Bryan Estepa, Grizzly Bear,

Movies:

Deliverance, Fog Of War, The Big Lebowski, End Of The Century, Baraka, Bridge On The River Kwai, Night Of The Hunter, Psycho, Dark City, Vertigo, Rope, The Crow, Pretty In Pink, Down By Law, anything by Robert Rodriguez, Mad Max, A Streetcar Named Desire, To Kill A Mockingbird, Sin City, Scarface (Say hello to my li'l frien'!), St Elmo's Fire, Jaws, Crime Novel, A Clockwork Orange, Mulholland Drive, Dog Day Afternoon, Cape Fear (the original with Robert Mitchum), No Country For Old Men, music DVDs like Muse live in Paris and Depeche Mode's Devotional DVD (best live music performance ever).

Television:

I'm watching less Channel 10 and more SBS and ABC lately, a fact that makes me feel vaguely superior and smarter than I was before. If I had cable I'd probably be obsessed with the History Channel, so it's probably just as well that I don't. I think people who say "I don't watch TV" are pompous asses that have never learned to appreciate a great documentary or top-notch script.

Books:

William Faulkner, Saki, Haruki Murakami, Homer, Edward Gorey, Allen Ginsberg, Ray Bradbury, Dylan Thomas, John Donne, William Shakespeare, Halldor Laxness, John Julius Norwich, Ian Rankin, Walt Whitman, just to name a few. Anything that makes me work hard and lift my game. Currently reading a biography of that inscrutable bastard, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Oh, and when I'm taking a break from the hard stuff, I love Ann Rule's true crime schtickers.

Heroes:

Walt Whitman, who wrote: Love the earth and the animals, despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants... re-examine all you have been told in school or church or in any book, and dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem.
