About Me

" T he music of Cape Verde and Angola has been transformed into an international phenomena by the Cape Verde-born and Brockton, MA-based Mendes Brothers João and Ramiro" . All Music Guide I n 2006, the Mendes Brothers were recognized by the Prime Minister of Cape Verde with a “Medal of Merit” for their invaluable contribution to the music of Cape Verde, while Ramiro Mendes was awarded the “The Order Of Volcano”, the highest civilian medal , by thePresident of Cape Verde for his distinguished contribution to Cape Verdean music and culture.

B orn in the small village of Palonkon on the island of Fogo, the Mendes Brothers emigrated to the United States in 1978. Shortly after their arrival, the brothers formed a band to perform Cape Verdean and Angolan music. In 1980, Haitian keyboardist Nono was invited to the band's leadership, composing original songs and serving as musical director. In 1982, the Mendes Brothers would record their debut LP, entitled “Um Novo Método” (A New Method). This was the first Cape Verdean album to combine the musical traditions of Cape Verde, Haiti and Angolan Semba in one album. After the album the brothers began taking music to professional level. It was then that Ramiro Mendes began studying classical guitar and João Mendes began studying voice. Ramiro would enroll in the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study Commercial Arranging and Film Scoring in 1986, completing his studies in 1993. While still at the school, Mendes produced several albums, namely, “Angola Minha Namorada” for Waldemar Bastos of Angola, “Distinu di Belita” and “Mar Azul”, the two albums that officially launched the career of Cesaria Evora.

L aunching MB Records in 1992, the Mendes Brothers began work on their debut album, Palonkon. The album was released in summer of 1993 to great success in Cape Verde and Angola, spinning several hit songs, including “Angola Beleza Natural”, “Angola Na Paz” and “Helena”. Their 1995 Boston Music Awards winning album, “Bandera” launched a new Cape Verdean musical movement by the same name and is largely responsible for re-launching the Angolan musical style of “Semba” with its phenomenal mega hits such as “Angola Kuia”, “Balumuka PALOPs”, “Madalena” and “Si”. The album became an anthem in Angola and greatly helped to promote Semba throughout the world. Other recordings by Mendes Brothers include “Torri di Control” in 1997, “Para Angola Com Um Xi Coração”, in 1998, an album totally dedicated to the peace and reconciliation of Angola, “Satélite Zamby” in 1999.

S ince founding MB Records Ramiro and John have created a highly sought-after music catalog, featuring all the prominent stars of African-Lusophone music. 'Mendes'in History

Mendes: , the Greek name of Ancient Egyptian city of Djedet, also known in Ancient Egypt as Per -Banebdjedet ("The Domain of the Ram Lord of Djedet") and Anpet, is known today as Tell El-Ruba. The city is located in the eastern Nile delta and was the capital of the 16th Lower Egyptian nome of Kha , until it was replaced by Thmuis in Greco- Roman Egypt . The two cities are only several hundred meters apart. During the 29th dynasty , Mendes was also the capital of Ancient Egypt, which lies on the Mendesian branch of the Nile (now silted up), about 35 km east of al-Mansurah .

Mendes: was a famous city in ancient times, attracting notice of most ancient geographers and historians, including Herodotus (ii. 42, 46. 166), Diodorus (i. 84), Strabo (xvii. p. 802), Mela (i. 9 § 9), Pliny the Elder (v. 10. s. 12), Ptolemy (iv. 5. § 51), and Stephanus of Byzantium (s. v.). The city was the capital of the Mendesian nome , situated at the point where the Mendesian arm of the Nile ( Scylax , p. 43; Ptol. iv, 5. § 10; Mendesium ostium, Pliny, Mela, ll. cc.) flows into the lake of Tanis . Archaeological evidence attests to the existence of the town at least as far back as the Naqada II period. Under the first Pharaohs , Mendes quickly became a strong seat of provincial government and remained so throughout the Ancient Egyptian period.

The chief deities of Mendes were the ram deity Banebdjedet (lit. Ba of the Lord of Djedet), who was the Ba of Osiris , and his consort , the fish goddess Hatmehit . With their child Har-pa-khered (" Horus the Child"), they formed the triad of Mendes. :

The Great Mendes Stela

Long live the Sun-Horus, the strong youth, the Lord of the diadems, the glorious, the golden Horus, who has crowned his father, the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, the Lord of the country, the friend of Amen, to whom the Sun has granted victory, the Son of the Sun, the Lord of the diadems, Ptolemaios, who loves the Ram, who is the Lord of the city of Mendes, the Great God, the Life of Ra, the Generator, the Prince of young women, the Only God, the Original male power of gods and men, who reveals himself in the region of light with four heads, (that represent him as) the illuminator of heaven and earth by his solar splendour, as the one coming in the Nile-stream, as the one granting life to the terrestrial world, and as the air for all men: whom the gods praise, whom the goddesses praise in his form of the Living Ram, who is rich in male power, who is the Prince of the Deities.

Ptolemaios: Ptolemy II Philadelphos, 284-246 BCE, married to Arsinoe II (278-270)
Ram: Banebdjedet, an early fertility god.
Since the Old Kingdom rams have been kept at Mendes and buried in a hypogeum, an underground burial site.
In Graeco-Roman times animal cults became more popular than ever.
