About Me

Chapter 1: In the beginning
I was born in the previous millennium, and I'm not dead yet. Hatched in Pennsylvania, lived in Texas, Ohio, Kentucky, and California. Played trumpet and soprano bugle in bands and drum corps through my teens. Picked up my brother’s guitar, started writing songs, and it’s been downhill since. I also fiddle about on keyboards, harmonica, mandolin, and bass guitar when nobody’s paying attention.
Chapter 2: More music trivia
My dad sang me cowboy songs when I was little. The first song I remember on the radio was She Loves You (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah), which we ridiculed mercilessly. The album that first inspired me was Heart of Gold. My first concert was the Eagles, supporting their first album, and opening for Yes. It cost $4.50. Those were the days. In 1981 I was in a band called Modern Cleaning that played Ramones and New York Dolls, as well as originals and punked up versions of Elvis & Beatles. I still perform my song But Not Tonight from that era, acoustic.
Chapter N: Playing around
A few years back I got inspired by some of the music going on - I remember especially Coachella 2004 with the Chili Peppers, Iggy Pop, White Stripes, Jack Johnson & more. My songwriting ramped up and I got the itch to perform. Not usually much on classes, I took some voice lessons and recording courses. I've been playing cafes, bars, & festivals from Oceanside to Ocean Beach (good song titile!) with occasional jaunts to Riverside & Orange Cos. I've played the SD County Fair, Balboa Park, Disneyland Hotel, Vail Lake Rersort, and E Street, 2Spoons, It's a Grind & Turquoise coffee houses. I've met some great people and get my best thrills when the music connects with a listener. Trying to make the world a little better place one song at a time!

Band Members: In 2008 I've teamed with Annie Rettic, who sings, writes songs, and plays 5-string fiddle & mountain dulcimer. (More at AnnieRettic.com.) It's good stuff, with rhythm & lead instruments, harmony vocals, and a mix of originals, traditionals (specializing in Irish tunes), and some pop/rock covers. It's more fun than a pot full of monkeys!
Influences: John Prine. Rolling Stones. Neil Young. Warren Zevon. Tom Petty. Hank Williams. Steve Earle. Ramones. Creedence. Lyle Lovett. Steve Poltz. Jimmy Buffet. Social Distortion. John Doe. Elvis Costello. Leonard Cohen. Dwight Yoakam. JJ Cale. Jimmy Buffet. The Kinks. Scarr Tucker. And many more. Plus special inspiration from all the great musicians I'm meeting playing around San Diego.
Sounds Like: music, when everything goes right.

Dark Side of the Moon - the movie

Watched a great 2003 documentary on the making of that classic album.  Lengthy modern interviews with all four Pink Floyds (but never together!), plus Alan Parsons (engineer) and others - even th...

The Encinitas Ukulele Orchestra

I don't know if that's what they're really called, but they were playing at the opening of the grand new Encinitas library.  There must have been 30-40 ukes, from young kids to old guys.  Th...

Stanley Clarke at Anthology

Very excellent show.  Anthology is advertised as "upscale casual;" the sound, seats, and service are excellent, at a price.  Stanley was great, with a hot violinist, some of the best drummin...

"Evening Train"

I don't know why, but the inhabitants of my song world seem to be on an antisocial spree lately.  What can you do?   We were in the tavern just the lads and me in came the sheriff and a...

"Macho Man"

Ah, this is more like it.  The gym I go to has a lot of macho men.  Imagine the whole barroom shouting out the responses.   I'm a Macho Man (MACHO MAN) I'm a Macho Man (MACHO MAN) I'm a...

"Be kind"

I don't know if these anomalous verses were prompted by the holiday spirit, or as an attempt at atonement for Monkey Stew.  This is destined for the "didn't quite make it" pile, so...

"Show Me the Money"

This chorus kicked around in my head for a while, and I finally wrote the back story.  Maybe I've been reading too much crime fiction.  (Currently: The Grifter, a good fit with the song.)&nb...

Monkey Stew

Ingredients... One friend planning a round-the-world trip.  Memories of baby octopi in paella bought from a Paris street vendor, and a crunchy fish stew served up by a family in Fiji.  Ongoi...

So I played the new Oceanside Sunset Market last night.  A very good turnout, fairly appreciative audiences, good food, some interesting booths, and good quality but limited selection of produce....

JT Moring in the SD Troubadour

If you pick up the August 2007 San Diego Troubadour magazine, turn to page 19 and look for the guy puckering up to the microphone holding a mandolin.  Between Barbara Nesbitt and Peter Bolland, b...
