Original Tongues

wood, metal, flesh, and a voice....

About Me

the original tongues is basically a situation where songs i’ve written (sometimes as small life,) are colored in and given a persona to wear as a recording. theres a lot of improvisation as i feel thats the natural way to explore music of any genre, and im here-by inviting all of you to go on the trip with me. some of the mp3s on this page will be small life, some will be original tongues versions and jams, there might even be something from my father, one my uncles (they both play in a number of bluegrass and gospel groups,) or just what ever i think is worth a listen. i play in antennaeboy/teeth collection occasionally, with my good friend matthew reis (epicene sound systems,) and i play in meaning with matthew and joshua fink (go see our profile below,) if you’re not really feelin one, please try another because things can change quite a bit from one song to another, just as every day can be an up... and then a very direct down the next. i got into music because of my friends, im alive because of my friends, and i play and make the things that i make for my friends, i am what survives me as they say... on another note: i’m also a "freestyle" photographer, so if youre looking for a cheap, fun guy to freelance, get a hold of me. i also raise bees and sell honey, so if you’re lookin for something sweet, i got ya there too! i’m talking real honey, made by real bees in my backyard, and yes... we are the thing mostly killing the bees, not that the rest of the world is trailing too far behind us. we need to return to a more agricultural society people in order to live on this planet. this is fact. think of the technology we have, the resources, now turn all that to the production of food and eco-conscientious homes, instead of another automobile plant or strip mall or wal-mart. there would still be plenty of jobs. corporations have to be cut down, not habitats. if you’d like to talk bee talk, or any kind of talk for that matter, we can get down to the nitty gritty of apiary theory, radical evolution, the loss of half of the male population (not that that’s a bad thing,) and conflict resolution. im also very open to any kind of performance art or tree trimming parties. nylon...? cool... let me know what you think about the sounds and such. i hope all of you remain well. open circles - elisha (e)

Band Website: right here in myspace
Band Members:usually it's just me (elisha,) there is no "band." i do not use samples unless its a fragment of a speech or something of cultural/historical significance said better than i could say it myself. i should mention my instruments as they probably are my most reliable accomplices: a gretsch synchromatic, a fender gemini, an alvarez folk size, an alvarez european mini-jumbo 12-string, a beautiful baldwin banjo from my father that weighs about 30 pounds, an old king upright bass (my oldest wooden friend,) a tatra handmade classical from prague, my mother's old jews harp, a lot of bowls that i've collected over the years, and all kinds of other assorted weird things i've made or found, or permanately borrowed. i try to play with as many people as possible and love to improvise. if you like what you here and think you can contribute or just want to jam, drop me a line, im always looking for more tongue.
Influences:the sounds of the real world, the beautiful one that we often overlook, tom waits, nels cline, fred frith, ryan adams, man or astroman, jazz mandolin project, john fahey:bill evans, medeski martin and wood, do make say think, the minutemen, mike watt, the guitar of d. boon:akron family, michael gira, my morning jacket, charles mingus, hank williams sr., chet atkins:morton feldman, leafcutter john, built to spill, howlin wolf, henry threadgill, lightnin hopkins: marc ribot, shipping news, june of 44, the necks, andres segovia:akio suzuki, gamelan music, traditional japanese music, roland kirk, stevie wonder, derek bailey, mbira music, maps and atlas', architecture in helsinki, the great one, jimi hendrix:miles davis (especially in a silent way,) ida, low, sleepy time gorilla museum (especially carla,) pj harvey:teeth collection, godspeed, 16 horse power/wovenhand, pelt, melodic and creative noise bands, wes "the thumb" montgomery:chris mccoy, sara asher, tonite golden curls, carla kihlstedt and two foot yard, susie ibarra, hella, my friends and loved ones....and a good dose of popular culture....

Sounds Like: probably sounds like everything i listen to put through the original blender. theres definitely the folk element. my father is an eighty something banjo player straight from the hollows of kentucky and i grew up listening to bluegrass and old gospel songs.then i heard man or astroman in my twentys and thought that surf guitar was the coolest thing ever. then i went to a jazz fest, took some acid and saw medeski martin and wood and decided that i wanted to play music so i went out and bought a double bass.i played for a few years and eventually joined a psychedelic funk jam monster called the Switch here in dayton, ohio. then i started playing a guitar that i got with some sex for paying my girlfriend's car payment. i got my money back, sex, and an old fender gemini. that's kinda how i ended up where i am now....the original tongues is usually just me, sometimes playing with my pre-recorded other i's, and sometimes i actually enlist one or two of my friends. i play my originals and some covers and then improvise exstensively in the live situation. i get my friends to help me and we go through just about every genre there is (except new country which shouldn't even be a genre.) theres some rock, jazz, some reggae/dub, various bastardized versions of traditional music from where-ever in the world depending on what i'm listening to at the time.... and of course heavy doses of raw noise. i like to experiment with micro-tonal sounds, toys, garbage, home made instruments, myself, old "hill" songs that have turned bad, you, and pretty much anything that just happens to come out of the moment.
