About Me

I'm a writer and editor.I founded and edited the fiction magazine Zoetrope: All-Story with filmmaker Francis Coppola and was its editor in chief for seven years. More recently, I wrote a novel, MAN CAMP, published by Random House in 2005 and released in paperback in 2006. I've been a fiction judge for the National Book Award, the New York Public Library, Poets & Writers, the Morning News, and other magazines, conferences and organizations. I've also taught classes in writing and publishing at various conferences and schools. Currently, I'm a contributing editor at Harcourt Trade Adult Division, acquiring fiction.

My Interests

All the usual -- great food, travel, reading, writing, thinking, talking ...

I'd like to meet:

Anyone who likes to read, write, think and exchange ideas.Or anyone who needs feedback on their fiction. In my spare time, I'm a freelance editor interested in taking on private fiction clients. My services include line editing, critique and guided revision of manuscripts, as well as limited professional (publishing) mentoring.I make no guarantees as the publishing industry is notoriously fickle. If such an arrangement is of interest, contact me via this page or through my personal email account: [email protected].

Music:

I listen to different music depending on my mood and the task at hand. For writing, lots of weird ambiant sounds. For dancing with my daughter, the louder the better. Here are some faves: Alison Krauss, Aretha Franklin, Gillian Welch, Bob Dylan, Air, Lucinda Williams, Diana Krall, Billy HOlliday, Miles Davis, John Coltrain, Thelonious Monk, Merle Travis, Hank Williams, Patsy Kline, Beau Jocque, Johnny Cash ...

Movies:

As I'm working on a screenplay that happens to be a dark romantic comedy, all I've been watching of late are romantic comedies (most of which are pretty dumb!). But, I've been enjoying some of the 1940's screwball comedies like Christmas in Connecticut, etc.

Television:

Don't really watch it ...

Books:

Anna Karenina -- perhaps all time favorite. The Great Gatsby -- of course. Anything by Chekhov. Contemporary writers -- Pete Rock, Pinckney Benedict, Martha McPhee, Russel Banks, Steve Almond, George Singleton, Haruki Murakami, Ian McEwan, Russell Banks, Paul Auster, Jim Lewis, Melissa Bank, Mary Gaitskill, Lorrie Moore, Iris Murdoch, John Irving, Iris Murdoch, Raymond Carver, Graham Greene, David Sedaris, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Alicia Arian, Jhumpa Lahiri . . . .

Heroes:

I'll have to think about that ...
