CARL MACKEY
Carl Mackey is a saxophonist from Perth in Western Australia. After his early beginnings on piano and clarinet, Carl took to the saxophone at age 14. By 15 he was gigging regularly around Perth and was playing alto with the state jazz orchestra, WAYJO. Upon leaving Churchlands High School, he entered the Bachelor of Jazz course at WAAPA.
Carl was a finalist in the James Morrison Scholarship in 1989 and 90.
He won the award for Most Outstanding Soloist at the 1994 Jazz Australia Showcase.
As a member of Speedball won the Perth Jazz Society Award for the Most Outstanding Jazz Group of 2002.
As a member of Salamander won the Perth Jazz Society Award for the Most Outstanding Jazz Group of 2003.
The Carl Mackey Quintet won the Perth Jazz Society Award for the Most Outstanding Jazz Group of 2004.
TOURS
-Singapore with Churchlands High School group in 1988 as a member of the Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Stage Band and Rock Band.
-The United States (Los Angeles, San Fransisco, New Orleans) with the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band in 1993.
-The United States (Los Angeles and New York) and London to study in 1994/95.
-Cambodia to perform in Phnom Penh in 1995.
-India with the Perth Jazz Orchestra in 1998 to perform at the Jazz Yatra Festival in Mumbai and another performance in Pune.
-Toured to New Zealand and The United States to perform at The International Association of Jazz Educators conference in New Orleans in 2000 with the Michael Pigneguy Sextet.
-Italy in June/July of 2006 to perform at the Villa Celimontana Jazz Festival with Speedball and Salamander.
Tours regularly and extensively all through out Australia.

Carl has performed with Lionel Hampton, Bernie McGann, Don Burrows, James Morrison, John Pochee, Steve Tallis, Mark Levine, Kitty Margolis, Terrell Stafford, Richie Cole, Barney McAll, Phyliss Dyller, Dale Barlow, Trilok Gurtu, and has jammed with Ellis Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Ronnie Matthews, Alvin Queen Baptiste, The Waifs, Thirsty Merc, Beck and The Beastie Boys.

He is currently lecturing in saxophone and ensemble studies at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
Carl has earnt a reputation as an energetic and exciting saxophonist and can be heard in some of Perths leading groups including, Speedball, Spur, Salamander, Sly and various sized outings under his own name.
