MyGen Profile GeneratorDONALD HARRISON'S new CD, 3D is availabe at CDBaby and ITUNES--------------------Saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr. was born in New Orleans and is the embodiment of much of the citys cultural heritage. He has been an active participant in the traditional brass bands. He started in the seventies as a young teenager alongside people like Dr. Michael White. After playing in New Orleans modern jazz bands, he ventured to New York in 1979 to play with most of the true great jazz innovators like Art Blakey, Lena Horne, Roy Haynes, Miles Davis, and McCoy Tyner. His participation with the Mardi Gras Indians began at the age of two as the Little Chief to his father, the legendary Big Chief, philosopher, and intellect, Donald Harrison, Sr. Harrison is now the Big Chief of his own group, The Congo Nation. It was his experiences with his father that gave him the idea for the ground-breaking recording, Indian Blues. The record merged Mardi Gras Indian chants, R&B, and Modern Jazz. After receiving a residency from Meet The Composer, he began writing classical music for major orchestras based on New Orleans culture. Harrison is one of the most sought after saxophonist today. .On the international and local front, he has played in many of todays top Funk, R&B, Rock & Roll, Smooth Jazz, Afro-Carribean, and Rap groups. In the mid 80's, Harrison had a revelation which led him to merge all of his vast musical experiences into a style of jazz known as, Nouveau Swing. It is no wonder the New York Times calls him, The Greatest He recently started his own record label to help further New Orleans music. On most Mondays and Tuesdays, you can find him supporting New Orleans music by teaching high school students at the Tipitinas Foundation. When asked where he finds the inspiration for so many things he answered, It comes from my mother who just recently got her Masters degree in Museum Studies. At the age of 69, she felt the need to go back and get credentials so she could tell our stories from an insiders perspective. If she can still be vital at her age, then I have no excuse.

Sounds Like: Donald Harrison is the funkiest man on the planet. He made it cool to put Hi-hop, R&B, and New Orleans music in modern jazz in the late 70's when he was nineteen. He is one of the true innovators of our times. He is also a great singer, rapper, and dancer. Watch as he continues to move music in even more directions.
