Transsolar records, founded in 1997 and based in the heart of the Prenzlauer Berg area of Berlin personifies the independent spirit of the city and the bands and artists that make up the label. Past releases on the label include the anti-capitalistic fury of swedish garage rockers The (international) Noise Conspiracy, the Synthpunk insanity of the Phantom Limbs and the musically ueber eclecticsm of Monochrome as well as the ambiguous and abstract jazz and rock musings of Golden. Boy From Brazil with his freaky trash disco-pop further strenghtens the Transsolar roster especially for his potent live performances that evoke the spirit of Jim Osterburg, Lux and the King himself.So Transsolar prides itself upon defying the cliched and conventional codes and conventions of genre with a roster that ranges from the idiosyncratic and enigmatic electronica-blues of Quintron through to the postmodernist rock n roll of the Tokyo Sex Destruction, a band whose love of rock n roll and its iconographx is as blatant as it is visceral. Other acts include the velvets-esque, no-wave pop riffola of Viva L'American Death Ray and Kid Congo and his band the Pink Monkey Birds. The Kid, as he is also known, has previously enjoyed success with punk outfit the Gun Club, then as a memeber of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds as well as the Cramps before starting the Pink Monkey Birds and his deranged electronic project Kid and Khan. Khan, whose real name is Can Oral, adds faux campy vocals to the duos sleazy mix of punk electronica and blues. Together with his friend Snax, Khan is also half of Berlin-based electro pop pairing Captain Comatose.Thus from the subversive no wave of Viva L' American Death Ray Music to the electro garage pop of Boy From Brazil, the label defies genre by signing bands from electronica and rock n roll poviding they have the integrity and verve that so few in the music industry have today, to wit , they must be musical misfits, those alienated by the cruel hegemony of the mainstream.
