Biography
Amanda Cain, 28, recently departed from Literature for Life as Editor-In-Chief of Yo’ Mama Magazine to concentrate on her upcoming family expansion and to return to the world of music. She’s a graduate from Centennial College’s post-graduate corporate communications program and has eight years of Public Relations experience.
At the age of 17 Amanda learned of her pregnancy and departed from her family home. After moving into the Massey Centre for Women’s shelter and diagnosed as having manic depression and a bi-polar disorder, her main goal is to educate and motivate teenagers through media arts.
As a single mother of a ten-year-old boy, she is an avid supporter of maintaining music programming in schools, environmental awareness and the need for affordable housing. Amanda hopes youth will rally together around their issues and hold government accountable for long range policy planning.
Her work experience includes 11 years in urban music, four years in book publishing and seven years managing her PR consulting company, Oracle Entertainment & Consulting. Most recently she worked with Rush The Vote and BlockHeadz as Director of Communications and as a writer for the Ontario government, Ministry of Transportation.
Amanda is a current general board member of Jessie’s Centre for Teens, member of the City of Toronto’s Children and Youth Services Advisory Committee, president of her buildings tenant association, recipient of the 2008 Toronto Dollar Award, an Ontario Volunteer Award, Sorportmist Women’s Opportunity Award and Pilot Award and founding member of Jessie’s Community Education Project and co-founder of the Jessie’s Centre Scholarship Award. She is also a past member of the following organizations: Toronto Youth Cabinet, Young Mum’s Committee at Oolagen Community Services, Canadian Women in Communications, Urban Music Association of Canada, Canadian Academy of Recording Artists and Sciences, two-time judge for the Juno’s R&B category, member of Chester P.S. Home and School Council, general board member of PhemPhat Productions and co-coach for her son’s soccer team.
