About Me

Shelly Colvin is an engaging singer/songwriter whose background is as diverse as her influences. She was born just south of Nashville, in Huntsville, Alabama, where her family still calls home. Shelly was reared on gospel, country and bluegrass, learning to harmonize to “Abilene” or “Old Rugged Cross” while sitting around the house singing and picking with dad, a Baptist minister of music, mom, uncles and grandmother, who still plays a wicked fiddle every Saturday night at the New Hope Community Center. While attending the University of Alabama, Shelly became involved with the drama department, and expanded her musical horizons by discovering and falling for the Southern rock sounds of Widespread Panic and The Allman Brothers.Upon graduation, a wild hair and a twinkle in her eye led Shelly to Los Angeles, where she scored roles in several TV and film productions, and hooked up with an all-girl pop/rock outfit called “Season.” And while “Season” didn’t draw from Shelly’s down-home roots, and quickly faded, it did provide her the opportunity to collaborate with prolific producer Mike Post.Post, long active in the country music scene, worked with Shelly in forming a country duo (Sister South), whose hand-in-glove harmonies were beautifully produced by Post, Herb Pederson, and the legendary and incomparable producer Jimmy Bowen. The duo quickly drew the attention of many in Southern California, as well as in Nashville. Despite landing a song on a major motion picture soundtrack, and scoring gigs opening for the likes of Travis Tritt and Craig Morgan, Sister South parted ways, prompting Shelly to make a much-longed-for move back South to set out as a solo artist. Now based in Nashville, Shelly has quickly landed a music publishing deal and is currently writing songs for her debut solo album with acclaimed songwriters such as Mark D. Sanders (“I Hope You Dance”), JD Souther (“Heart of the Matter,” “Heartache Tonight”), Dave Berg ("Stupid Boy"), Lori McKenna ("Stealing Kisses") and Chris Tompkins ("Before He Cheats"), to a name a few.
