"one of the best young songwriters in Nashville..." --Grayson Currin
"From the first measure, you hear the unmistakable sound of the pure and uncompromised spirit of an artist who just wants to sing what’s in his heart. And it rocks you right down to your soul..."--Puremusic.com
"Cockrell’s gotta be the guy who found that perfect pop sensibility Paul Simon seems to have lost somewhere along the way. But that’s not the only thing that makes Cockrell’s music so affecting (his recent, faith-focused To Be Loved EP, in particular).Cockrell layers that gorgeously innate sense into folk- and Americana-pop songs that keep a rustic honesty despite being fleshed and lush and haunting, like gingham dresses trimmed in lace.It comes across, maybe, via the strength of Cockrell’s voice: It’s controlled and warm, but the edges break subtly and never with affect, like a guy who really inhabits the meaning in his words. The words: "Truth will keep on shining, like a morning sun, brighter than troubled winds can blow/ And if you lose your vision, you can use my eyes to see just where it is you need to go." — ’Pride (Won’t Get Us Where We’re Going)’ "
The Tennesseanabout
I love music. It does something to me that’s unfair. It knows the corners I walk around, and when I’m least expecting a confrontation music throws its punches. Music confronts me. I grew up in church because my Dad was and is a preacher. Both my brothers are too. It’s basically the family business. I suppose I’m preaching just the same. However, when I was young and sitting in my fourth Sunday service for the day (no easy proposition for a young boy with a chronic case of ants-in-the-pants) the music would start to play and the effect was profound.
Music has always had its hand around my throat. I started playing guitar when I was out of college because I finally realized it was indeed a possibility and that I was tortured without doing so. I haven’t quit since then and I don’t suppose I will anytime soon. I have recently moved to Nashville, where I have found many like-minded souls who believe there is still music to be made, songs to be written, and truth to be told.
