We are a free independent, entertainment publication that was established in Marion, Ohio in April, 2001. Our last issue was released in 2003 and since then we went seperate ways. In July, 2006 we picked up the pieces and revived the magazine for a more professional look.
Underground DIY since 2001!
Our goal is to expand the minds of the willing to undertake a different view of the entertainment industry with an emphasis on sub-cultures and counter-cultures. An underground, independent, non-mainstream excursion of words and visions. A coalition of local music in every genre.
Content includes: National band interviews, local band interviews, concert reviews, area recording studio features, independent business profiles, indie movie reviews, indie/local album reviews, poetry, art, photography, short stories, alternative sports, alternative religions,
book reviews, local film, local comedians, & more.

Out Of The Blue
Mission Statement
What can be recorded in a publication that can’t be found on TV or in any popular publication? What makes a magazine stand out when placed next to a colorful, well-produced professional publication? These questions have been addressed in Out Of The Blue (OOTB). This is a non-traditional, anti-mainstream, DIY publication in every sense—from content to format. We purposely produce the copy written magazine in black-and-white with staples. The entertainment industry as a whole is based on profit making; in this aspect, we offer Out Of The Blue to the fans of indie entertainment for free.
--Talented artists exist beyond the realm of mainstream money-making contracted record labels. In particular, the focus is placed on the local music biz. In many cases, local solo artists and surrounding bands kick more ass than national acts. This magazine welcomes deserved exposure to talented acts that exist in our own hometowns. More specifically, Out Of The Blue profiles four or more local bands per issue and allow fans to vote in a “Battle For The Cover†contest. (For more details on Battle For The Cover, see below) We also spotlight local artists by providing album reviews in “The Lowdown†section. Genre coverage is unlimited.
--Out Of The Blue covers national events in the form of concert reviews, album reviews, and exclusive interviews. This approach allows local bands to be spotlighted in the same realm as national bands, with equally deserving coverage.
--OOTB’s “Independent Arts Section†offers writers (poetry, short stories), drawers, painters, graphic designers, and photographers a chance to be seen, for free. The talents mail or e-mail us their original DIY work and it is reviewed for publishing consideration. We also spotlight area non-traditional artists /designers, authors, and independent film producers / directors. The “Alternative Sports Section†was created in the same respect.
--Sports are generally stale, repetitive and traditional. The definition of what a sporting event truly is has become blurred—sharing what rests in that blur opens more options. The gaps have been found and we hope to show our reading audience the wide array of non-traditional sporting events such as motocross, paintball, frisbee, skateboarding, snowboarding, backyard wrestling, ghost hunting, in-line skating and suspension among other innovative sporting event creations.
--In developing stages are various feature sections. We are creating independent business profile features, indie film director profiles, local venue profiles and independent recording studio features as well as an exploration of alternative religions. After all, it is the small business that paved the way for big time corporations, and it’s the small venues that are the first to house acts that later become national.
We aim to expand minds of the willing to explore a different view of the entertainment industry with an emphasis on sub-cultures and counter-cultures. We support individuality, genre diversity and freedom of voice in the entertainment industry. Stereotypes and labels are eliminated.
In summary. We are constantly being force-fed by the media to “buy this,†“watch this,†or “read this,†either directly or subconsciously. Out Of The Blue is a free outlet for the public to open their eyes and experience what the indie entertainment industry has to offer in all forms: from live concerts to albums, movies, musicianship, sports, and the arts. Incorporating all these aspects—with gifted generous free-lance writers, photographers and citizen journalists—creates a unique publication.
It would be amazing to witness similar publications develop nationwide; created “for the fans, by the fans†with an intention to “look beyond the mainstream.†It’s time to give recognition to the unrecognized.
Without the staff, area independent businesses, area promoters, local bands, assistance from the national artist level, feedback, support, encouragement, and the number of willing contributions, Out Of The Blue would not exist. Much thanks and appreciation to everyone involved and beyond!
Out Of The Blue is released quarterly.

Battle For The Cover
Battle For The Cover gives fans a chance to vote in a contest between the four or more area bands featured each issue in Out Of The Blue.
The voting lasts for 2-3 weeks via myspace messaging, e-mail, and mail sent to our P.O. Box. One vote per person is allowed, and we update the vote count frequently in the form of myspace bulletins and blog entries. Many times it’s not only fans that vote, but general people that take a listen to the band via their myspace accounts or other forms, making a decision based on listening samples.
The winner for the cover gets their band's pic shot on the cover of the issue. We arrange a photo shoot with the winning band and pick an informal place to shoot the pix. We also save the pix on a disc and provide them to the band for their own future publicity use.
(If you may have any questions or comments, or if you are interested in contributing to the publication in any form, feel free to message/comment here on myspace, send mail to out P.O. Box address, or e-mail us.)

I currently attend Ohio State University as a Journalism major with minors in Criminology and Geography. I am employeed full-time as Manager of a local restaurant. I've always been a fan continuously in search of unique, inordinary outlets. The intention of the publication is to celebrate the non-mainstream entertianment industry in a diversified way. The heartbeat lies outside the commercially force fed media and resides inside independent creation. We offer this to fans in hope of promoting the underground entertainment scene--
there is much to offer outside the everyday contemporary, conservative mindset.

A writer at heart and a slave to the music, I am currently working as a restaurant manager by day and working the streets for OOTB by night. Although I have no degree yet, I have attended college at The Ohio State University and Sinclair Community College. I currently reside in Dayton, Ohio with my heavy metal husband Jason and our two dogs. I was there for the birth of OOTB and have returned to see it into the future. Don't waste your fucking time, let live let go…look beyond the mainstream.

Duane Frost is currently a freelance writer from Delaware, Ohio, but stems originally from Atlanta, Georgia. Having grown up going to shows and listening to various amounts of underground music, he knows talent when he sees it. At 10 years old Duane attended his first hardcore show at a house in Conyers, Georgia and was hooked from that day forward. We feel that he brings a real sense of the street to our magazine. Attend any Columbus hardcore or metal show and chances are you will see him there!

I am currently enrolled at The Ohio State University majoring in Journalism with a minor in Political Science. Raised in Bucyrus, Ohio; I have had nothing but time to explore above and beyond mainstream media and music. I enjoy everything from Bobby Bare Jr. and Two Cow Garage to Coheed and Cambria. Some of my favorite authors include Hunter S. Thompson and Vonnegut, the former being the most influential. I try to make it to as many concerts as possible when I have the time. Right now I find myself unemployed so there is plenty of time for these excursions. I do a little photography, however my skills are what one would call “amateur†to the fullest extent, but practice makes perfect.

My name "SINtheticHead3000" holds a long metaphorical description of our world. If you’re feeling like unlocking the Da Vinci Code have at it.
Anyhow, my real name is Zac Tennar and I graduated from Bellefontaine High School back in some reform life somewhere, sometime when life was led by a lie. Aside from that mishap, I found purpose in writing, self expression by all means whether it be simple artwork, music, drawing, photography, philosophy, or whatever. All in all, I am a self educated man, father of two, and possesee' of human wisdom, talent, mic rockin skillz, etc. I'm a block rocker of sorts whether online or off (like the dress of a dame enslaved by the sensation of my throbbing...) clueless though I once was, on the path I chose to take in life.
I now find my only comfort through different styles of self expression. Through my talents I record and document beauty, life, and experience.
Nothing more, nothing less.
