Add to My Profile | More VideosGrowing up as part of a huge multi-racial family in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Daniel was at a very young age exposed to a lot of different music and culture from all over the world. With father being a tenor saxophonist and his mother a classical pianist it was odd that he began playing guitar rather late in life at the age of 14.After taking classical lessons for a year he switched to electric guitar and began to explore the immensely vast world of music from all over the world, from Jazz, Blues, Soul, Reggae, Classical and Rock to Indian Sitar music, ancient Greek, Indonesian, Japanese Koto, Latin-American and West-African music. His explorations of different instruments such as saxophone, flute and trumpet eventually led him to the music of Allan Holdsworth, a life-changing experience for most musicians. Hearing Holdsworth introduced him to new sounds and possibilities, which in turn exposed him to more fusion oriented artists such as Larry Carlton, Al DiMeola, and Scott Henderson. In 1998 Daniel decided to study full time at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA for two years and graduated with honors in 2000 from the world famous Guitar Institute of Technology (G.I.T.) Teachers / Private Teachers / Mentors included: Brett Garsed, (The Nelson Brothers, John Farnham) Carl Schroeder (Count Basie, Miles Davis) Paul Hanson (Duran Duran) Scott Henderson (Tribal Tech) Ross Bolton (Al Jarreau, Earth,Wind&Fire) Steve Lukather (Toto, Los Lobotomys) Mike Stern (Miles Davis) Frank Gambale (Chick Corea) TJ Helmerich Paul Gilbert (Racer X, Mr. Big) Keith Wyatt (Albert Collins, Albert King) Sid Jacobs and Jamie Glaser (Jean Luc Ponty)This exposure to discipline, hours of practice and preparation for long sessions rendered him well versed and performance ready in many different musical styles such as: Jazz, Funk, R&B/ Soul, HipHop, Fusion, Ska/Reggae, Dance Hall, Latin, Afro-Cuban, Blues and Indie/Pop/Rock.It also made him realize that success as a studio musician comes from knowing that your number one priority is making the artist happy and developing a reputation for giving those who hire you what they want.In 2000 he declined an offer to work as a guitar instructor at the World-renowned E.S.P. School of Music in Tokyo Japan but instead was signed to the Patrick William Salvo and Associates PR firm (www.pwsagency.com) and did a national tour with the very famous Junkyard Prophet, a Midwestern Christian group from Minneapolis, MN.With Los Angeles as a home base he was a teacher at the faculty of the YAMAHA School Of Music in Arcadia, California teaching: "modern contemporary electric guitar"After working with various artists in and around Los Angeles, The Midwest and the East Coast (such as A LITTLE SPACE, White Morrison, Toni Days, JFlexx/Nate Dogg, Shelley D. Richards, Robert Fleischman (Journey), JC Chasez (NSync), MC Blakfist, Nightshade, Tunsi (Parana Records), Shaka Buku, 2 but not 2, Kota Omori (Tokyo), Aki Fujimoto/Vibe-a-Matic, Jocelyn and Wild Roots)he decided to move to the more urban and Jazz oriented Bay Area. Here he has worked with various hip hop and Soul/R&B groups such as Unsampled, MC Mars Attax, MC Orukusaki/Forensic Science, The Nu - Gospel of Chris Fields, Hubert Emerson, Ron Matthews, DTO, The Prophet Margin, Tequila, Jerry J and California Flight, MC Mars Attax, Velear Chavez quartet, PETRO BASS, 3rd Heaven, Tal Ariel and Great Beast and straight ahead Jazz groups such as the Vincent Tolliver Quartet and the Al Lazard Quintet performing regularly in and around Oakland in places such as KPFA Radio studios, Club Cafe Axe in downtown Oakland, 2232MLK, Eli's, Blakes, Plantation, Silk Road Lounge, club@17th and Mingles.Besides being a member of a backing band for MCs all over the Bay Area, MC battles and Breakdance competitions he is also currently working as a guitar teacher on the faculty of the Art & Soul Music School in Berkeley, CA, part of a hiphop workshop at La Pena cultural center with Latin-R&B bassist Raul Perales and MC Brutha Los of the Company of Prophets crew, a member of the faculty of the ALMA music and language academy and a member of the faculty of the 'Bandworks' live playing workshops. He is currently doing sessions, live performances and freelance studio work in and around the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Europe, Japan and the rest of the
