Mykhal was born in Columbia, SC (The Dirty South) where he was introduced to music at the early age of 9 years old. His first instrument was alto saxophone. Before you knew it he had also started to play soprano saxophone at the encouraging of his childhood idol, Carl Greene, who was a great saxophonist.
And as his skill level grew, he and some friends decided to play for a school dance where they knew the grand total of 3 songs!! Well, the songs lasted for at least 45 minutes each and thus the first gig was now history and his first band was born!!
At the age of 12 years old and the member of a performing local band, Mykhal was now gigging every Friday and Saturday. As part of the band's routine, the members would switch and play other instruments. And this is how Mykhal became totally captured by the sound and the playing of the bass guitar.
Influences such as Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins, James Jamerson, and Willie Weeks motivated Mykhal right from the start. Now his influences also include bassists Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Wyzard (Mother's Finest/Stevie Nicks), Matthew Garrison, Dominique DiPiazza, ZA (Arrested Development), Gary Wilkins (Bass Director A.I.M) and the list goes on.
Living in the ATL for many years then Hawaii, Mykhal has worked regionally, nationally, and internationally. Over the years he has had a chance to work with many talented musicians. Lately, he has had the opportunity to work with the extremely talented and soulful D'Layna (his favorite and No.1 'soul' sista), talented producers Vincent Kwok, Gregory Del Piero, vocalist Kenny Bobien and more. Mykhal is living, gigging, and teaching in San Francisco and the Bay Area. He continues to do session work, putting his own project together, and layin' down the groove in a number of other projects.
