About Me
Hashim Ibn Sharrieff was born in Brooklyn , New York , and his family moved immediately to Laurelton, Queens less than a year later. He is the eldest of Five children after his parents divorce with two step brothers , and one step sister, and one sister from the first marriage. He found music a salvation and choose bass as a pure desire for the instrument first, and his Fathers suggestion to take up a hobby. The house was always filled with Motown, Jazz, Music Movie scores and Caribbean music. He found one blessing after another his High school music director noticed his abilities and he gave him his first Double bass . Tom Barney (bassist), was his neighbor(SNL/Steeley Dan),The Jazz Knights were a fixture in the community, and Steve Kroon (Luther vandross/Ron Carter)Percussionist lived on his block on 229 th st. If this were not enough he got to listen to the great Barry Harris when his father used to go for saxophone lessons in Manhattan at The Jazz Mobile,and had the life altering experience to meet the astounding Wynton Marsalis at a music program in 1987 along with Reggie Veal(Jazz bassist)at his highschool that wasn't even a music magnet school. He would go onto lead several local bands named, Entourage, E'vage, The Sharrieff Syndicate, while at this point being primarily self taught on electric bass, electric guitar, keys, and drumset. At this time he was accepted to college as a music major and received further mentoring from Charlie Persip Jazz Legendary Drummer( at Queens Borough CC),then Frank Hansen, a Berklee graduate on double bass/electric bass who worked on Broadway, and with Dizzy Gillespie. His first professional engagement was at The Holy Unity Church band and was broadcasted on NY Gospel radio 1169 am. During the years of 1989-1994 he worked regularly from The Village Gate, The Red Zone, Double LL studios, Rap studios samples, The Hollywood and Effect band,Michael Lavias(Gospel), the Toni Ann Semple project,opening for Kwame,NY1 spot, Local Queens clubs, Club SweetWaters,all while leading two bands and attending College at Five Towns College with such luminaries as Melonie Daniels(Gospel/Mariah Carey), Alfonzo Blackwell(Jazz saxphonist).
In addition to these exceptional artist he performed on many Queens Rap samples for Bass. As a bassist with 29 years experience, He has performed for,with, or opened for such diverse acts and personalties from Chuck Mangione as well as President Clinton. / cabs and amp with Behringer limiter,compressor,gate,bass enhance, eq,aphex bass exciter and a fuhrman light power rack mount. I admit I have too many pedals, suffice it to say Boss gear is on the floor of effects.I use Mooradian soft gig bags(double bass/ electric bass two sided) I can also sing background while playing bass. My passport, anvil cases,and portable dvd are ready to hit the road. If I needed to say it HAHAHA of course I read music LOLLOL. I am Local 802 musicians union member, and a member of ASCAP as well. I have recently added some standard electric basses; one four string Fender Precision bass, one four string Fender Jazz bass,one 5 string Music Man,One Robelli 4 string Hollow body,and a 4 string custom Jazz.I will buy the Ken Smith 7 string bass for my graduation present to myself. I have attended way too many schools, My favorite was The New School University Jazz Division(Charles Tolliver Big Band Class, and Jimmy Owens small ensemble were smokin),Hunter Cuny, York Cuny, Bmcc Cuny, Ccny Cuny, Five Towns College, Qcc Cuny,Laguardia cc, Old Dominion Univeristy VA., and The Armed Forces School of Music VA.Graduation should be this Summer 2008 BFA Music Performance Double bass/ Electric bass. The only Luthiers I use are Peekamoose,Rudy Pensa,30th.Street Guitars,Kolstein and Sons,and David Gage.
