About Me
The Denver-born singer/songwriter Lucas Freeman began his musical career singing in the church choir. The apple of his mothers eye, the two performed a duet of Old Time Religion when he was just six years old. After the performance, however, the pastor approached Mrs. Freeman and requested that Lucas no longer come on stage if he could not control his lustful-hipped imitation of Elvis. He never sang in church again. At twelve, after Lucass mother passed away, he was sent to live with a neighbor, Joseph Einstein Johnson. Lucas spent most of his time putting around Einsteins bar, standing in the back mimicking every move the bands on stage would make. Eventually, he taught himself to play guitar and conned his way into working as a roadie for his favorite local band, Dirty Sanchez. In 1994, Dirty Sanchez had a tragic meltdown. The lead guitarist,
Jared Fields, learned that the lead singer had ran off with the rhythm guitar player in a secret love affair and the two had skipped town. Desperate to keep that evenings gig at The Camelot, Jared took a leap of faith and allowed the fifteen-year-old Lucas to step in, covering both vocals and rhythm guitar. The live performance was recorded by the sound engineer and later released as a bootleg all across the Denver underground. (The Camelot Sessions ©1995)Despite the bands rising fame, Dirty Sanchez came to its demise later that year. Lucas and Jared remained close, playing late-night jam sessions in Jareds basement where Lucas had taken up permanent residence until going off to college in 1997. At the University of Denver, Lucas teamed up with Ishmael Beeson and Ryan Staton forming the glam-rock cover band Shag Rug. Lucas education was eventually derailed, having spent all his tuition on guitars and equipment. It was then that Lucas began writing his own songs.During this time, Jared Fields had himself a shotgun wedding and settled down with his long-time groupie girlfriend, Carrie Draper. But after Lucas quit school and Carrie quit Jared, the two found themselves back in the basement. With Shag Rug stalled and Lucass eagerness to perform his own music, Jared joined the trio and Backdoor Kitty was born.Backdoor Kitty has been selling out local venues, college campuses, and gothic bar mitzvahs the last six years and has created a cult following all across the Midwest.
