About Me

Happy to be here.
I'm a keyboard botherer - piano keys, or laptop keys, i'm happy with either.
Music moves me like nothing else. Well, OK, there is something else that does too but let's face it, I'm single.
I'm also a gazer into infinite space, but just as likely to have my attention caught by the colour of feather sweeping past my window.
I'm an INFP on the Myers-Briggs personality chart (Healer-Idealist.) Try it yourself!
http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes1.htm
For someone who loves music so much, i've often wondered why it is that i sometimes need silence just as much. I'm almost embarrased by it. I used to spend several hours a day, over many years of my life, practising the piano, sometimes the 'cello (my poor parents. And neighbours.). Four days a week i'd play all kinds of music for a ballet and dance school. On a Saturday afternoon i would go down to my local second hand bookshop, and in the back room musicians - from concert pianists to clarinetists with decades of travel and music behind them to amateurs like me - would come and go, joining in with the trad jazz being rehearsed and played with while people browsed the books in the front room and occasionally found themselves drawn in to watch and tap their feet along. If persuaded to leave the piano, i'd give the vibraphone a go. Then years later came the band. I've taught music to groups of parents and their small children, i've taught piano for many years. My life has always been joyfully saturated with music. So how can i explain that sometimes silence is just necessary? I read a lovely sentence from Vikram Seth that i'll quote here, that explains it beautifully - that tries to say that music is all that is needed, "...but not too much - for the soul could not sustain it" (V.Seth). And this is exactly it. For my soul takes flight in a million molecules and drifts far around and above the world through music, roots down into the earth, flies through aeons; music brings up long buried emotions, unfurls the beat to my fingertips and shoots arrows of love into my heart... and just sometimes, you need silence at the centre of your soul, you need to re-tune yourself, before you can join in again with the band and the carnival procession.
Dinner on me (well, not, ON me, exactly) for anyone who correctly guesses my favourite piece of music on the player below ;) Or at the very least, a custard slice in the post.
Peace X

Kindness
Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.
Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness,
You must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.
Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow
You must speak to it til your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense any more,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend

You are The Moon

Hope, expectation, Bright promises.

The Moon is a card of magic and mystery - when prominent you know that nothing is as it seems, particularly when it concerns relationships. All logic is thrown out the window.

The Moon is all about visions and illusions, madness, genius and poetry. This is a card that has to do with sleep, and so with both dreams and nightmares. It is a scary card in that it warns that there might be hidden enemies, tricks and falsehoods. But it should also be remembered that this is a card of great creativity, of powerful magic, primal feelings and intuition. You may be going through a time of emotional and mental trial; if you have any past mental problems, you must be vigilant in taking your medication but avoid drugs or alcohol, as abuse of either will cause them irreparable damage. This time however, can also result in great creativity, psychic powers, visions and insight. You can and should trust your intuition.

What Tarot Card are You?

What female superhero are you???

Catwoman
You are the anti-hero. Now quite a hero but prone to heroic actions and a protector of abused women. Dark, sleek and full of feminine wiles, you steal your way into people's hearts. Meow!

Sincere thanks to a friend, for a recent reminder of this poem ~
'Usk' by T.S Eliot
Do not suddenly break the branch, or
Hope to find
The white hart behind the white well.
Glance aside, not for lance, do not spell
Old enchantments. Let them sleep.
'Gently dip, but not too deep.'
Lift your eyes
Where the roads dip and the roads rise
Seek only there
Where the grey light meets the green air
The hermit's chapel, the pilgrim's prayer.
My horse, Xita, blinking in the sunshine.

From my friend, Carriage, a perfect poem, perfect for me anyway :)
White Darkness by Virginia Hamilton Adair
Whether this is time or snow, passing
Through the night, earthward,
Who can tell—
Each particle only an illusion; yet massing,
Mounting over all,
Hushing the footfall,
Silencing the bell.
“I am confused,”
Said the traveler, “hearing no sound
Though my feet touch the ground
As they are used.”
Soft as a shadow on fur
The filling places
Where his footsteps were;
Lost without shape or grime
His path through the level spaces.
How can we certainly know
If this is time
Falling, or snow?

Your Power Bird is a Cardinal
You believe that each day is precious, and you spend your times as best as you can.
You see the wonder in small things, and you are often content with what you have.
You life an interesting, colorful life - and you bring color to those around you.
Confident and expressive, you believe you know how to live a good life. You're living it! What's Your Power Bird?

My Interests

I like minimalism. I love the sleek, modern, and pure. However, as you can see from my profile, whatever my intentions might have been to start with, i end up going for everything with bells and whistles on. If it were possible, i'd even have a secret corner on this page that you'd be lucky to stumble across - somewhere hidden away, with uneven, rounded walls, a tiny, askew and deep set window that lets in a blink of sunlight and a breath of starlight, with just room for a beeswax candle and an object of mystery from lands far away, and floorboards made smooth by centuries of secretive feet.

I'm an 'Earth Rooster' and Aries with Gemini rising... if those things mean anything to anyone (spare me the cynicism ;) )

Sheer class - and my first serious crush (that i've never got over). The great - Buster Keaton

Music:

I ventured onto myspace to find my old band Witness and see what Mr Starkie is up to now. Music is A Big Thing for me. Highly catholic taste. Been through sooooo many different loves for musical genres and lifestyles and am left with kind of a hotchpotch for myself and a fond regard for all of them and a highly bizarre wardrobe. Obviously love all the different centuries of music, too, and enjoy 'new contemporary' and world music. Only other thing i would say about music is that as far as post 1970s popular music goes, Joy Division/New Order did, and still do, influence everyone. Imvho. :-) There's one other band everyone is influenced by: The Kinks. Obviously.
Records that made a difference: 'Cruisers Creek', The Fall; 'Clouds', Joni Mitchell; 'Love my way', Psychedelic Furs; 'Siamese Dream', Smashing pumpkins; 'Loveless', My Bloody valentine; 'Daydream nation', Sonic youth; 'Trompe le monde', The Pixies; 'Sound effects', The Jam; 'Hatful of Hollow', The Smiths; 'Japanese whispers', The Cure; 'Unknown pleasures', Joy Division; 'Substance', New Order; 'Waterloo Sunset', The Kinks; 'Crossroads', Tracy Chapman; OK Computer', Radiohead; 'Takk', Sigur Ros; 'Funeral', Arcade Fire; everything by The Doors; and oh too many more to mention...

The Keys to Your Heart
You are attracted to those who are unbridled, untrammeled, and free.
In love, you feel the most alive when everything is uncertain, one moment heaven... the next moment hell.
You'd like to your lover to think you are flexible and ready for anything!
You would be forced to break up with someone who was ruthless, cold-blooded, and sarcastic.
Your ideal relationship is lasting. You want a relationship that looks to the future... one you can grow with.
Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment.
You think of marriage something you've always wanted... though you haven't really thought about it.
In this moment, you think of love as commitment. Love only works when both people are totally devoted. What Are The Keys To Your Heart?

Television:

Bit of an unwelcome guest up the corner really. If anything though, things like Lost, The Simpsons, Spaced, Malcolm in the Middle, Futurama, Peep Show, Cold Feet, Family Guy, Black Adder, Q.I., Jeeves and Wooster, Coast, The Mighty Boosh, Time Team, Scrubs, Green Wing, Black Books, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, I.T Crowd, The Sky at Night, and timeless re-runs of Open University classics :o) Enjoying Californication and 30 Rock, too. I watch too much TV really [studio applause]
From Family Guy:
Stewie Griffin [reading the Bible]: My my, what a thumping good read. Lions eating Christians, people nailing each other to two-by-fours. I'll say, you won't find that in Winnie the Pooh.
Chris Griffin: Please, don't say pooh.

Books:

'...PEOPLE OF ORPHALESE, BEAUTY IS LIFE WHEN LIFE UNVEILS HER HOLY FACE. BUT YOU ARE LIFE AND YOU ARE THE VEIL. BEAUTY IS ETERNITY GAZING AT ITSELF IN A MIRROR. BUT YOU ARE ETERNITY AND YOU ARE THE MIRROR.' [Kahlil Gibran, 'The Prophet.']
Books... The one i'm supposedly writing and might finish within the decade. Books are my thing. Come! Talk to me of books! :-) Complete bibliophile, and far too many favourite authors and poets to mention here though have to of course mention Margaret Atwood, T.S Eliot, Marge Piercy, Virginia Woolf, Isabel Allende, Philip Pullman, Iain Banks. Then there are stand alone, perspective changing books like 'The Power of Now'. I can't seem to get on friendly terms with any of A.S Byatt's books (or even finish them), for some reason. Don't get me started! ;-) I'm the kid that had read the whole cereal box over breakfast, was writing comic strips during break, relishing being Head Librarian at lunchtime, and had 3 books on the go at bedtime. Actually not much has changed except i believe there's a different Head Librarian now. Pfft.

Heroes:
