About Me

Finally figured out why I quit guitar lessons soon after starting them at age 5. I thought it was because I'm such an independent and stubborn child that I didn't want anyone to show me how to play. I'd teach myself. Here all this time I thought guitar lessons were my mother's idea. She's always encouraged me in anything I've shown a genuine interest in.A couple years ago I thanked her for doing that for me even at such a young age. Imagine my surprise when she said that I'd been insisting on guitar lessons increasingly since age 3-4. She thought I might be too young and wanted to wait. I guess it took me about a year to break her down. She took me to a music store in Fond du Lac to sign up for lessons and pick out my first "real guitar". I'd been strumming a cheap plastic toy for awhile and it certainly wasn't made for serious playing. My mom plays piano and confesses that she knows NOTHING about guitars. (Even though her mother plays guitar and mandolin.)She let me pick out an acoustic bass. Yeah, that's right...only four strings. (not a uke, either...it was an adult size acoustic bass prolly popular with all the folk music groupies in 1969.) ok...remember, I strummed my toy guitar. I wanted to learn to play chords (ie rhythm guitar). Try strumming a bass. I had one lesson with that bass and tried telling my teacher that I wanted to play like Elvis, The Beatles and that new guy John Denver who sings "Leaving On A Jet Plane". He said it would just take time.Yeah, time and a 6 string guitar. Not a bass.No one seemed to understand that something was wrong with this guitar. I was wayyy too shy to protest that this guitar didn't "sound" right. I figured I must be doing something wrong. I took it home and kept trying to strum it right. It only sounded okay when I played one note at a time. I refused more lessons with that teacher since he wouldn't show me how to strum my guitar, only individual notes.I never explained the problem to Mom, maybe I was just confused myself or maybe even pissed at that guy for making me learn notes first. I WANT TO STRUM!!! dammit.I still refused to give up on that guitar though. I played it to the point where I'd put band-aids on my fingers after the blisters broke and keep playing. Mom still teases me about that.(I think this explains my latent musicianship. Maybe I should just ask my therapist ;P )

My Interests
