I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

American Cities

that best fit me (according to an unscientific internet quiz):

75% New York City
75% San Francisco
75% Washington, DC
70% Boston
70% Philadelphia
Which American Cities Best Fit You?

My Interests

basement and dumpster spelunking, modern furniture, design, outer space, veganism, writing, conquering the sunday times, telepathic communication, postal mail, men with style AND smarts, things made of glass, hot monogamy, soy chai, coincidences, trees, academia, gouache, walks, runs, alternative uses for xmas lights, wit, creative and avid recycling, cooking, making things, learning new tricks, mending things, improving things, random acts of fabulousness, meeting interesting new people (near + far), india, knitting underwear, traveling, Dwell, snapshots, inhibition, karaoke (see inhibition), macs (not the sandwich variety, people!), yoga, breaking a sweat, tearing up the dance floor, costumes, spelling, typography, spontaneity (and people who can spell it correctly), urbanism, many other things...

I'd like to meet:

Anyone who can tell a good story, fiction or non.

People who like to play dress-up.

Crafty people who don't take themselves too seriously. I have a friend who set out to knit a (3-dimensional) pig and decided to turn it into a puffer fish. If this sounds like something you would do, I want to meet you.

People who have special relationships with technology. Oh wait. That's....all of us. How's your div-class hangin'?

I like intelligent people who are passionate about things. These things don't have to be the same things I'm passionate about, either. I just think it's important to have a little sizzle for something(s).

A a sense of humor is critical. A sense of spelling is helpful. And sense of the perfect mixed CD gets bonus points.

Music:

Radio Paradise

WKNC
, NC State's radio station

WXJM , JMU's radio station, where my sister has her show

And other than that, I enjoy a veritable plethora of aural stylings. Ani Di Franco, Ash, The Beastie Boys, The Beatles, Beck, Bellafea, Belle and Sebastian, Ben Folds Five, Blue Six, Blur, The Breeders, Bright Eyes, BT, , Carole King, The Coral, Cornershop...and many other groups starting with other letters in the alphbet.

Movies:

I'm a sucker for indie films,

and usually foreign ones,

and sometimes even stupid ones.

I'm not really into movies in which everything blows up, but I'll humor a friend or foxy fella who might want to watch one.

Television:

Television was something I had time for every once in awhile as a social activity before I started grad school. (Can you say 'Clone High marathon?')

Books:

Balzac + the little chinese seamstress, Orbiting the Giant Hairball, Griffin + Sabine trilogy, My Year of Meats, Freakonomics, David Sedaris, Graham Greene, travel guides, the Harry Potter series—they are so much better than the films (seriously. don't judge.) (+ so many more...I love to read when I can find the time.)

Heroes:

My uplifting, amazing, creative, intelligent friends. Female designers who dare to kick ass and be heard/seen in the boys' club. My fabulous family (they rock). Everyone who voted 'blue' in the last election. The folks who create the LSAT. Short-order cooks. Those who keep on rockin' in the free world.

My Blog

A week in the life of a new grad student.

It began on Monday--bright, but thankfully not too early. We design students aren't exactly 'morning people, ' after all. If my own circadian rhythms are a prime example, my roommate will testify that...

Adventure in the Friendly Skies

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28We were approaching Nashville, TN and I had just returned from the lavatory. I took my seat and started to fasten my belt. But when I slid the two pieces of the seatbelt together, a ...

Look out, PNW

The adventure begins. Watch this space. There may or may not be updates depending on how much fun, free time, and internet connectivity I'm having as I galavant about the Pacific Northwest. And if you...

HPOG Update

I've been meaning to return to this subject for awhile, but have been too busy to put fingers to keyboard. However, I'm happy to report that the HPOG infatuation is now a closed case. I saw him at Har...

Returning to Raleighwood

Murphy's Law of the HPOG (Hot Post Office Guy)

Why is it that on the days when I look my worst, the Hot Post Office Guy emerges from the uncharted depths of my neighborhood? No, this guy doesn't work at the post office. I just see him on my ...

Ten benefits of platonic cohabitation with the opposite sex

I'm going to break my own rules and talk about real people on the internet. But that's ok, because I don't think any of them but me and Arun are on Myspace, and what I have to say is more complimentar...

Breakup by blog...and why do they blog in the first place?

I admit, for all the words and stories pent up in me (and those who know me can attest that there are many), I am somewhat reluctant to blog. I mean, are there safe subjects? What do people want to re...

What the hell is Splenda?

We're doing something wrong, here, when our society places chemical creations of dietary wonder and nature-defying mystery above their natural counterparts. Why, for example is Splenda supposedly bett...
