THE COMMUNITY OF OCEAN BEACH AWARDED TWO COMMUNITY SERVICES AWARDS TO BEACH MUSIC MAFIA IN OCT 2007 FOR SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH MUSIC. ( We received one in 2005, also). Beach Music Mafia is an organization of movers and shakers in the San Diego music scene with the sole purpose of fostering a better scene. In our eyes (and ears), it's all about the audience and it is the audience we serve, first. But that doesn't mean we don't love anyone more than we do musicians. Especially San Diego musicians. We are interested in encouraging the idea that musicians be paid fairly. Hell, we even took on an established business association with whom we were working, and wound up firing them, when they revealed to us that they wanted to keep musicians down so they didn't have to pay 'em. We were told that at the time we gained enough sponsorship to fund every stage and give the musicians a fair pay. We actually walked, took our sponsors, the bands and our ideas to a different festival, altogether, and gave that festival its best music program ever. We don't necessarilty try to fit in with the general consensus, rather, we prefer to perpetuate the right thing to do, even if it means rocking the boat a bit.................. WHY?.................. BECAUSE WE BELIEVE IN MUSIC, YOUR MUSIC, ALL OF IT, AND THE BENEVOLENT POWER IN IT........ SO ITS WORTH IT TO US TO STICK UP FOR THE RIGHT THING TO DO! And we do.....................check it out............... We create music events such as the annual "CASH ONLY! - A Tribute to the Music & Legend of Johnny Cash. We're in our fifth year of hosting MUSIC ON THE AVENUE at the Ocean Beach Farmers Market on Newport Avenue, every Wednesday (Vote the BEST in SUNSET MAGAZINE AND SAN DIEGO MAGAZINE!). We invented the famous OB SUN JAM. A LOT OF GREAT ORGANIZATIONS ALIGN THEMSELVES WITH THE OCEAN BEACH STREET FAIR - BUT, WE'RE THE GUYS WHO ACTUALLY BOOK THE MUSIC, GET THE STAGES FUNDED AND MAKE IT HAPPEN. This year's event involved an upheaval in the way things get done in Ocean Beach Music, and BEACH MUSIC MAFIA ADDED A NEW FIFTH STAGE, allowing us to include more styles of music than ever before. Shucks we even had KUSI's very own KRISTIN CUSATO as our MC for 4 of those stages. We also produce the music for the POINT LOMA VILLAGE FAIR AND, RESTAURANT WALK & THE OCEAN BEACH COMMUNITY PICNIC. The MOB goes big and generous during the holdays, as well, coordinating events and fundraisers during the month of December in order to "give back" to the community with events such as OCEAN BEACH HOLIDAY MUSIC FESTIVAL / FOOD & TOY DRIVE. In 2004, 2005, 2006 we collected truckloads of toys and food for our challenged neighbors. In the meantime we host shows at Winston's and other area venues, on a weekly basis. Being big fans and supporters of San Diego's thriving music scene, we;ve even gotten involved with documenting the best of the best in San Diego (with the partnership of Bart Mendoza) with a series of compilation CD's/DVD's under the name "STARING AT THE SUN." BUT WE DON'T JUST THINK LOCALLY.
WE'VE BOOKED SAN DIEGO ARTISTS IN NYC (CHRISTOPHER DALE, KELLI RUDDICK, CARLOS OLMEDA, THE GRAMS, CHUCK SCHIELE); AND BOOKED OUT OF TOWNERS IN SAN DIEGO. The hottest music organization in San Diego. MEMBER OCEAN BEACH MAINSTREET ASSOCIATION.
