I'm Michael Head, a San Diego musician, producer and recording engineer. My main gig is lead and rhythm guitar, and maniacal pursuit of all things guitar. I also own my own studio and label, Headtrap Music, recording and engineering artist projects and producing indy releases.
I am also available for hire at my studio or yours for instrumental performance and/or recording and engineering. For questions and information send me a message or e-mail [email protected]. I currently perform with San Diego bands
The Skunk Apes, hard driving American rock with just enough theremin and cowbell as heard on "Zingety Zing" above; and The
Nocean Rock and Blues Band, a good-time SD cover band. Also performing live with Tristan Luhrs as
The Country Rockin Rebels performing good time rock, blues and country for the masses. Be watching for a loose group of awesome musicians doing Wednesday "Jams" at the Ocean Beach Farmer's Market with The Wednesday Band. This is what happens when people cancel gigs run by people who live for playing live.
I just laid guitar tracks on some awesome songs, including "Rise Up," with Chuck Schiele (The Grams, Ghandi Method, Beach Music Mafia) which has turned into the stunning rock project
Bad Science Fiction . Also working with local surf guru Sam McLarty on a vintage 60's SoCal surf film of original legendary Windansea Surf Club. We have begun performing and recording original but vintage surf instrumentals with long time friends Chris Spoto, Helicopter Pete Arnold, and new brother Gigo. The have lead to live in the studio creations to be the soundtrack.
I have played the
National Anthem for the San Diego Padres at Qualcomm Staduim and performed at the Miramar Air Show for SD rock station 101-KGB FM. I have been nominated for a San Diego Music Award. Recently privileged to have performed with such diverse acts as Gary Hoey, RDG, Joey Harris and Cash'd Out.
THE HEADTRAP STORY: After relocating from Washington, D.C. at the tender age of 18, I started
Headtrap Music in the sands of Ocean Beach, California. With partner Tom Trapp at my side, a key inspirator to expressing my art, we garnered the hopes of furthering the San Diego arts and music scene and created our own studio, label and music and media publisher. We recorded bands starting for free on an 8 track and performed and promoted shows, including some of our own projects
TTBK's, Big White Light, Blood Fruit, and Garage Salsa Society. We ran sound for Elizabeth Hummel, IMS, The Wiki-Up among others during the early 90's acoustic boom. We opened shows for Cindy Lee Berryhill and The Rugburns. We published The Vision Fanletter in the hard core/hard copy pre-Web days, and started our own ASCAP publishing wing, Third Lung Publishing. I continue the tradtion of "Technique over Technology" out here near the San Diego State area and would be glad to hear from you if it relates to music. Peace.
PRESS QUOTES:"A standout local label" -
San Diego Union Tribune
"State of the studio art... These guys don't need my help. Great guitar sounds and use of effects and reverb. Done on an eight track but sounds like a pro studio on a 24 track. " -
Michael Laskow (Taxi A&R / Recording Magazine)
"What's in the mix? A little pop, rock, disco (yes, I said disco), funk, classical and folk. I believe they are happy ... making music any way they damn well please." -
F*%$ Yeah!
"This is worth some cash" -
Icuras was Right (Lake Ariana compilation review)
"Michael doesn't play guitar, he sings through it." -
