"One of Kat Wyand’s major influences was an old folk guitar songbook she discovered when she was eleven. Another was the collection of Beatles records her mom played for her as a kid in the nineties. “People are right, I was born in the wrong decade,†Kat says. Most of the people who show up at her concerts are twenty or more years older than she is. But it doesn’t seem to bother her much. Kat is one of those singer-songwriters with no aspirations towards reality TV and no real need for that kind of publicity because everything she needs to tell the world comes out through the lyrics of her songs. She prefers to sing and write social statements in the style of Harry Chapin, while her rough, resonant vocals and influences from traditional music appeal to fans of artists such as Jack Hardy, Suzanne Vega and Joan Baez. She accompanies herself with self-taught fingerstyle guitar work (usually on an instrument covered in hippie-ish bumper stickers) and does an occasional a cappella song.
"Kat grew up in Connecticut and has been a member of the Second Step Players, a troupe that uses music and comedy to educate the public about mental illness, and the Shoreline Acoustic Music Society, both based in the state. She joined Indiegrrl, an international organization of women in independent music, in 2006 and was formerly a featured teen artist on their website. As of January 2008, Kat is an Audio Arts & Acoustics major at Columbia College Chicago."
