About Me
DJ Groovy Q started his attack on the dance floor in late 1997 armed with a two-year work visa for the UK. Initially his interest was in creating music, but after experiencing the various vibes that clubbing in London and Ibiza had to offer, he tried his hand at mixing. Groovy Q was soon cutting his teeth on the wheels of steel at private parties in and around London.
On his return home he scored South African residencies at AKWA and Purple Fly, where he ventured into the commercial genre, but soon returned to his true sound - a melting pot of Funky Vocal French and Disco house. He has also played at Mojo, Foo Moon Fusion, the Gaulious Party Paris with Love, Truth, The Roxy, Therapy, Sliver, Baseline, The Pyramid, Mos, AFDA, Oh, 115 to name a few and at one point mixing under the Red Bull Home groove banner. Groovy Q is presently resident at the underground party Citrus Lounge. He also held a residency at Cherry Thursday (Therapy / G.A.S.S.) and alternate Saturday residency at Therapy and the Sunday club Remedy.
His style of music is laid back, jazzy and always fresh - mixing French House, New York styled Vocal Garage, and a little UK Two Step. He also includes some of his own tracks in his sets, and his trademark signatures are house remixes of Sade.
Groovy Q has played alongside local DJs Stuart Hillary, Sista C, Thelma Klensch, Mbuso, Brian Banshee, DJFKA, Lalitia, Trevthedev, Prince Vince, Delon Palm, Fluid, Warren Louder, Angelo, Miss Red, Maximillian, Blue Nova, Brett Jackson, Dr Franklin Stone and Bart. He has also mixed alongside international DJs, Mark Bambach and Luigi Rosso of Coco Latte fame and Dsyfa.
Groovy Q has also enjoyed radio airplay, most recently his two step styled remix of a Sade track was picked up and played out during Roger Goodes Sunday dance show of Radio 5. He has also enjoyed airplay internationally on BBC Radio as a SA music representative.
He continues to pursue music production, and recently completed a set of concept reworks for Noa Tylo, Lady Lea and Battery 9. Groovy Q was selected as one of the top 14 in the Transmix contest with a honourable mention. His music is available for download on the Internet and has been awarded a top ten download for three months running on mPulse.
Presently Groovy Q is in the studio working with vocalist Vernon Joel, under the name VJDJ. Presently VJDJ have 7 tracks completed, and have been performing the tracks live at Clique Events, watch out clubland, there is a new dance force in town...
DJ Groovy Q was also commissioned by Ghetto Ruff Records to remix and produce tracks for soul sensation R.J.Benjamin, and interest has been shown from a French record label at Midem 2006.
