I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

Hello. My name is Dan. Im a political activist whos been bouncing around the left for a fair while, but have settled in the Communist Party of Great Britain. If you want to know why, check out that blog thing I just put up. I do some freelance journalism work and I’m a student of journalism in general. I’m also of course a student of Marxism and everything it entails, but that process has to take place outside of formal education since…well…it does.
I have been published a fair bit around the globe, but freelancing in journalism is a very cutthroat business. It might sound odd when I say I love writing, but hate the journalism industry for its generally biased, profit driven outlook and effective cold-shouldering of the labour movement.
I’m also a trade unionist within the Industrial Workers of the World. And the National Writers Union. I’m an intern editor for the INSP which is a collective of street papers from all over the world. In a nutshell I have to prepare the weekly news feed before I send it out onto the website. If you find all this very boring well…that’s ok…I guess. No it’s not actually, fuck off!
I like playing poker and having a bit of a laugh, and I also enjoy chess. I’m a big fan of Battlestar Galactica and Colonel Tigh rocks my world every time he appears and manages to (rightly) offend everyone. I play a lot of Dungeons and Dragons (you callin me a geek huh?) and I like to spend time with friends, usually when somebody else has cooked the dinner and I can just sit on my arse and laugh like some sort of stinking commie bastard.
I love parties and the like (as in ones where you just fill a house with people and drink till you forgot your name and say things you later regret to members of the female sex) but drinking huge amounts doesn’t always agree with me. If for some ungodly reason you actually wish to speak to me then feel free. I don’t bite. I just kick. Can You Help Save the Blood Service?

Yeah I saw that one coming.

My Interests

Politics. Socialism. Economics. History - especially the Russian Revolution, Rome, the Byzantine Empire, ancient Greece, modern British history, working class history of all nations, and pretty much anything else. I like chilling with my mates of course, and films usualy sci-fi, or anything directed by Ken Loach. I do a lot of reading and writing since it comes with the job and all. I do a bit of weight training and take an interest martial arts etc. I also play Warhammer 40K, unleash the Hammer of the Emperor! And I play D&D too! And Battlefleet Gothic

I'd like to meet:

Anyone with passion for whats important. Any fellow writers, thinkers, activists etc.

Music:

Usualy mod stuff, like The Who, Small Faces, The Jam, and others, but Im usualy pretty open minded. Probably the soundtrack to The Wanderers is the most epic cd in my collection. So yeah thats the kinda stuff Im into, but will bands please stop trying to add me unless you feel your music is my kinda thing. Not being mean or anything but I kept swamped with friends requests from bands and its damn annoying

Movies:

I generally like all kinds of movies. I recently discovered Ken Loach and have been obsessing over Land and Freedom and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. I like sci-fi too like Serenity and so forth, although the genre is getting a bit tired of late. I pretty much will watch anything cept god awful trashy British gangers films, although some have been known to be good, a lot of them seem to be saying how amazing it is to be a murdering criminal bastard, which isnt good. Land of the dead was pretty good, though it cant really stand up to the epicness of Roger DeMarco, yeeeha! Other films include the likes of V for Vendetta, Man on fire, The Matrix films, Rob Roy, Gangs of New York, in fact lets just say Liam Neeson is the man and leave it at that!

Television:

Dont really watch TV unless there is yet another documentary discussing "Marxism in the 21st century" so I can shout at it as they say yet again that its "not relevant" simply because class rule in the USSR fell apart. Its like these people have not only never read any marx, but have just been smashing their heads againt a wall for their whole life.
As you might have guessed I do like scince fiction. I think getting rid of Farscape was a total waste, although they could have done with changing the plot since it was just repeating itself. And Firefly, whos idea was it to get rid of that?! What a waste, it rocks! Its the best sci-fi ever! Im thinking we'll rise again!
I watch a lot of comedy, not sure if I have a favorite but have been loving the insanity of the Mighty Boosch.
But when all is said and done, the greatest show of all time is Battlestar Galactica (GINO to you embittered old timers) - its so deep with excellent character development and an amazing story. Damn straight.

Books:

Im not going to list a huge amount of books to try and prove to people that Im something special, because Im not, but you can probably guess the kind of things I read from the rest of my profile

Heroes:

Karl Marx of course. In particular any socialist who has the stones to actualy take a stand against the pathetic infighting in the left and really tries to get on with the actual work of fighting for socialism. Other smatterings of socialists who deserve merit are Rosa Luxemburg, Lenin, Max Schachtman before he went mad and ended up in the "first camp", Leon Trotsky on occasion, Antonio Gramsci, Hal Draper, Daniel De Leon (aside from his dogmatism which seems alive and well in the SLP) and James Connelly (republican socialism is inseparable from general Marxism, no rank economism for me thanks very much) though of course I need to read more of all of them! Also socialists who engage in debate not to flaunt their own egos and intellects but to actualy learn, and can stand corrected when they are actualy wrong and take no shame in that. For christs sake if you lose an argument its not the end of the world, its a chance to learn!
