About Me

..This profile was edited with Thomas' myspace editor™ V2.5I was born in Dublin in 1977, luckily enough into a family where music was and is as normal as breathing. As a kid I used to improvise on the piano and pick up tunes by ear from the radio or wherever else they could be heard. My dad gave me my earliest piano lessons and like him I developed a passion for playing the organ which is still a big part of my life. In my teens I started playing with bands at school while wearing my classical music hat as church organist. Soon I was listening to all the classic songwriters and bands from the 60's and 70's. I love the sound of raw, acoustic instruments and beautifully written songs. The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Traffic, Jimmy Webb, Burt Bacharach are just the tip of the iceberg.Eventually it became inevitable that I'd try my hand at writing songs and I went into a frenzy of activity doing just that. But as often happens, I got distracted by life and have done very little in terms of my songs in recent years. I've been kept busy as a jobbing musician, either piano player or organist. It's been great, but the time has come for me to get my act together and let you see and hear what I can do. My debut album, Reasons and Seasons has recently been launched and includes 9 original songs with me and a cracking band.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: ronanmurraymusic.com
Band Members: Me on piano and vocals, Pete Maguire on guitars and bass, Lynette Maguire on clarinet and Kevin Mullins on drums.
Influences: Where to begin... Bach, Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Vierne, Rachmaninov in the arena of "classical" and organ music. A great influence was Pierre Cochereau, organist of Notre-dame Cathedral, Paris until his premature death in 1984. He was a staggeringly gifted interpreter and improviser and a fine judge of whiskey. Getting closer to the present day, Gershwin, Kern, Bernstein and the Tin Pan Alley guys exerted their effects. I'm a huge fan of Motown and sixties soul music. In terms of modern songwriters, I owe a huge debt to Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb, James Taylor, Carole King, Van Morrison, Elton John, Jools Holland, Laura Nyro, Nick Drake, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Kate Bush, Tori Amos and more. Bands I've loved include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cream, Traffic, Mamas and Papas, Pentangle, Fairport Convention and loads of others... My good mates Josh Johnston and Pete Maguire have also been an unending source of ideas and inspiration.
