About Me

************************************************************ ****************Kamila is a singer and writer of songs based in London/New York and she has recently completed her debut album 'LOVE LIES', slated for release in the first half of 2008. You may have seen her touring with Bonny Prince Billy, Teddy Thompson, Sean Lennon and others, or perhaps have caught one of her very well received headline shows around Manhattan or London town. Kamila and her band will be playing in and around the London area over the coming months showcasing the songs from the record and more...
************************************************************ ***************
London native Kamila Thompson popped out in the early eighties, the third and youngest child of folk duo Richard and Linda Thompson. Kamila arrived on the scene during what was, by all accounts, a tempestuous final chapter in her parents’ personal and professional partnership. Her early memories are of enjoying a ‘conspicuously un-musical’ early childhood in the loving care of her Glaswegian grandmother.
Kamila attended the notoriously progressive boarding school Bedales (also responsible for Groucho Club-bothering starlets like Lilly Allen and Kooks frontman Luke Pritchard). Though it introduced her to a few bad habits (booze and fags) it was there that her personal relationship with music was firmly established and a particular affinity found with the emotive and gently-wrought works of artists such as PJ Harvey, Nick Drake, and Jeff Buckley. She made a few tentative steps into songwriting in her schooldays, which were, in her own estimation, ‘OK,’ recorded on a friend’s 4-track and performed to small crowds in Soho, London. For her eighteenth birthday, she was presented with a custom-made, ‘very very pink’ guitar by Danny Ferrington of Los Angeles- it has since become a signature fetish object of her live shows – which sealed her bond with music.
In early 2006, Kamila’s voice and songs had found a few interesting fans; she was invited to join cult hero Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s band for a tour of Australia and New Zealand. In typically quirky fashion, BPB (aka Will Oldham) had heard, but never met Kamila - they were introduced at Auckland Airport the day before rehearsals kicked-off. This was followed by her opening for Teddy Thompson on the UK leg of his tour, as well as covering Leonard Cohen for a Dublin installment of Hal Wilner’s ‘Came so Far for Beauty’ tribute, alongside Beth Orton and Nick Cave. Later that year, Kamila joined her mother, brother Teddy, and friends Rufus and Martha Wainwright onstage at the Wainwrights’ Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert, which earned her a glowing mention from John Pareles in the New York Times.
There followed tours as support for Sean Lennon across the US, as well as a number of headline shows in New York, including a packed house at Joe’s Pub, and in London. Sean Lennon was impressed enough by the material that he went on to guest on “LOVE LIES”, as did Martha Wainwright and a host of other fantastic musicians.
Sessions for Kamila’s debut album took place in Brooklyn, NY last year. Ably produced by Brad Albetta (who also produced Martha Wainwright’s first album) and Ed Haber, “LOVE LIES” is slated for release in the first half of 2008.
