About Me

DJ. Journalist. Label guy. Dancefloor whore. Happy go lucky type. Guy who invented the 'there's treasure in the roof' dance move. Beat that with a bat.
You can find the second half of the story @ the Knowfoowl My Space page
Dj Huwston first hit the decks at seventeen due to an extraordinary amount of music coming his way without a lot of avenues to communicate it. Working in the Creative Vibes warehouse (www.cvibes.com) at the time, a profile was soon built, along with experience, and shortly a list of appearances at bars across Sydney was apparent.
Since those very humble beginnings Huwston has gone on to develop experience in Promo and Marketing, Event Management, A & R and beyond. These experiences have seen him DJ interstate, at festivals, for corporate clients and secure residencies at some of Sydney’s best known hip-hubs. Drawing on a range of influences from Jazz and Hip Hop, to Rock, Boogie, Funk, Latin and many many more, the term best used to describe one of Huwston’s sets would be Freestyle. He is also a member of the eon Beats Project band which ranges from three to thirteen people. A favourite of the post acid-jazz funk crowd, eon began its life as a studio project and has expanded in to a creative juggernaut taking in the inspirations of all of its members who come from Ghana, the UK, New Zealand, Norfolk Island and many other exotic destinations (www.eonbeatsproject.com.au).
In 2005 Huwston established his own record label Knowfoowl Music to further his personal tastes and exploit the know-how he obtained since seven years in the music business. Knowfoowl Music debuted late 2005 with ‘Cressy St Breakdown’ by Melbourne Deep Funk act Cookin’ On Three Burners. The single was charted and playlisted by Djs across the globe including Russ Dewbury, Mr Scruff, Quantic, Nik Weston, and Ennio Styles and even found itself in the top 20 of DMC’s Leftfield chart in January 2006. Knowfoowl Music first two 12”s were distributed by Chicago based Groove Distribution (www.groovedis.com) and is set for a big year with releases by GPA featuring J Sands (Lone Catalysts), Rephrase, Gerard Masters and Edseven all imminent. Knowfoowl Music is distributed by Inertia in Australia and Rhythmethod in New Zealand.
2007 has seen the release of Rephrase’s Little Victories on CD which has gained great attention from the funky breaks community and is to be followed up by Cookin On 3 Burners’ Baked Broiled & Fried CD and 2UP’s Boomin EP.
Furthering his musical exploits by taking in journalism along the way, Huwston writes a semi regular column in Sydney-Melbourne streetpress 3D World (www.threedworld.com.au) called Bebop & Rocksteady. A good mixture of humour, politics and of course music, Bebop & Rocksteady hits its fifth year in 2007. Also in fortnightly rotation is the internet radio show of the same name on www.straightup.com.au . Huwston has interviewed many influential artists too including Roy Ayers, Dwight Trible, Dani Siciliano, Five Deez, Freddie Foxx, Keb Darge, Tiga and Madlib.
Early 2006 saw Huwston as the new resident for Tonic Lounge (Kings Cross in Sydney www.toniclounge.com.au). Known as one of Sydney’s best get-downs, with a house party vibe and extensive bar selection, Tonic is the perfect setting for Huwston and friends to unleash their own brand of Freestyle Funk. With a list of guests such as Music Man Miles (Breakestra), Benji B (Radio One Xtra), Ross Allen (Casual Records), Tony Nwakuchwu (Attica Blues) and Bensonn and Lanu from The Bamboos, this is one of Sydney’s only Soul Music policed clubs. Get down!
