Following on from our first 4 sell out shows, experience the flavour of one of the worlds most legendary club sessions as the Jazz Rooms comes to The Basement, Sydney! In a musical career spanning 23 years UK Dj Russ Dewbury founder of the Brighton Jazz Rooms has achieved a reputation as one of the best djs on the worldwide music circuit. Working with everyone from Art Blakey to The Roots Russ is also well known for his Jazz Bop live festival, New Jazz Spectrum Radio show and many Record compilations and productions.
Russ has now relocated to Sydney bringing with him a club concept that is much celebrated by the underground music community running consecutively for over 21 years in the UK and featuring all over the globe. “A Night at the Jazz Rooms” is a fresh live/dj event with Jazz at its core now fully resident at Sydney's classic venue The Basement.
Expect a dynamic mix of Jazz/Soul/Funk/Afro/Latin brought to you by resident DJ and host Russ Dewbury and featuring some of the heaviest International and homegrown live acts and djs around!
This first show of 09 features 2 of the most exciting up and coming live outfits from the new continent of musical heaviness:-
The Strides' catchy vocals, mesmerising grooves and original sound are taking Australia by storm! Fresh from their much talked about recent support slot for Tony Allen, The Strides unique afro-beat sound draws from influences such as Bob Marley, Augustus Pablo and Fela Kuti, forging a form of high energy dance music, as well a laid back dub experience. This 11 piece outfit consist of some of Sydney's finest jazz, blues and world music instrumentalists and now feature the vocal talents of Ras Roni, one of Australia's true masters, alongside special guests Oscar Jiminez (Watussi) and Michelle Martinez who join the band for this exclusive appearance.
Dojo Cuts are one of Australia's hottest new Funk outfits. Their explosive debut album is set for release at the end of April on international label Record Kicks and this show forms their official release party.Their distinctive sound combines super tight grooves, raucous rhythms and slices of soul featuring the powerful vocals of Roxie Ray - a combination that has won then fans including Gabriel Roth Musical director of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings alongside Lance Ferguson from The Bamboos and others. Influenced by the giants of funk and soul through the ages, Dojo Cuts are indisputably in the here and now, leading the charge Down Under in the unstoppable global funk resurgence.
Dj Russ Dewbury provides the Jazz Rooms unique soundtrack connecting dance vibrations from all strands of black music past present and future with a firm emphasis on energy and fun.Joining him on the decks are 2 of Sydney's finest selectors Frenzie and Man about Town to complete this stellar line up.
