I am a dreamer and a story teller. I have not really changed much since the fourth grade. I'm even gradually starting to look like Gary Coleman all over again, like I did in the fourth grade. Last week, I went to H and M and seriously considered buying underwear with Spider Man on it, just like the fourth grade. Wow! As a kid, it was playing house with the girls and G.I. Joe with the boys. And there was the Jackson 5. Nothing was cooler than the Jackson 5. This was before MTV. When the Jacksons were on an award show or when they got their own special, I would just watch every move, and look at every detail of their performances. I was captured and inspired by their excellence in a way that only a child can be. I had simply never seen anything that soulful, that funky , that flashy, that totally cool before. I think the desire to make music might have started right then and there. I was also a cartoon lover, Warner Brothers, and the classic stuff form the 40's and 50's. I spent a lot of time imitating Bugs Bunny and Michael Jackson, trying to get the sounds and pitches just right. It's ironic because Michael would later become quite the cartoon character himself. I know that's wrong....but you know.......He's still the man though. The strange man, but the man.Anyway today, I'm a singer, writer, and actor. I make music, records, commercials, tour, and occasionally create cartoon voices and character voices for video games. I still like playing house, in fact I like it even more than the fourth grade only now that I have my own family. I have a thing for clothing too. Not clothing as status symbol ( I think that is the work of the Devil), but clothing as a source for inspiration. I wear clothes, listen to and create music that makes me think, feel and move. And yes I love an audience. I cannot lie. There's a look that people give you when you're performance speaks to them. It is a very powerful exchange.I rock , therefore, I am. Author, sage, griot and pop star, Maya Angelou passed on one of my favorite sayings of all time. She says "people show you who they are in the first five minutes of meeting them". It's only a question of whether or not you are paying attention. I live by that. " Judge not lest ye be judged ?" Nah, man, go ahead and judge me. I am not that complicated. Allow me to break it down. I love my family, and not just my family, I love the whole concept of family. Ultimately, what is humankind, but a very large extended family? Deep, yes, let's set up a whole new blog on that one. I love my friends, (more extended family) I love my culture and I love the exchange of ideas that happens when you get more than one person in the same space. I also love making things, waffles, songs, characters, furniture, screenplays. And that's where being an artist comes in.The joy is in combining all these experiences and putting them into songs, stories and images. I work as an singer, musician, actor and writer. Those are the titles shown on my contracts and tax returns. It is work, it is fun, it is also a calling. There is some teaching in there as well. When you stand up in front of an audience and share your thoughts, perceptions and dreams, your teaching whether you know it or not. What you're teaching is another story and is very much in the eye of the beholder. When I'm writing a song, when I singing someone else's composition, or when I'm trying to inhabit a character, it's all coming from the same place. It is a desire to resolve some kind of conflict, to get the story across, to bring truth to it, and to get a reaction. That's a real philisophical way of saying I haven't changed much since the fourth grade.
