The youngest of three, Ashot Grigorian was born on July 20, 1974 in the industrial city of Donetsk, Ukraine. Extremely proud of his Armenian heritage, the music of the Caucasus region is an enormous influence on his playing.
When the decision came to determine his career choice, it was obvious that music had won his heart. He attended the Donetsk State Music College and continued his studies at Donetsk State University of Music (Conservatory) where he became a well-known musician in the city, playing at many jazz, blues, and rock festivals and establishing himself as an artist. Mainly inspired by saxophonists such as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman, Ashot's tone has often been compared to Kenny Garrett.
In 1996, Ashot's family had the opportunity to move to Canada. Here in Toronto, he has been exposed to such a variety of cultures, music styles and artists that constantly inspire him to create new and innovative improvisations.
