I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

I am an historian, writer, belly dancer and wannabe musician who plays drums and incorporates percussion into dance. I am band manager for my talented friends Echolocation and have absolute faith in them as musicians and performers. A new project is writing a history of the Special Olympics. Publication of this should coincide with the national games being held in Leicester next year, Summer 2009.I have just finished working on my third book which is about the history of winter sports tourism in Switzerland before 1914. This is now with a copy editor and should be ready for the publication by late 2008. I really enjoyed going to Switzerland to work in archives in the summer and have even been inspired to learn to ski, even though I'm terrified of going too fast!! So far I've only skied indoors at the Snowdome but I've acquired the outfit and await the opportunity to try it for real. I love the mountains but so far my adventures have been confined to summer wanderings in the Alps and a bit of cross-country skiing. My last book came out in 2005 and was called 'Working-class organisations and the development of popular tourism, 1840-1950'. This sounds boring but it was actually really exciting to work on. Originally it was called 'Why we're all going on a summer holiday' but someone reviewing for the publisher thought readers would be disappointed as it doesn't mention Cliff or film! I have a lot of fun with my research and meet amazing people around the world. Read some of the flattering reviews of this book on www.history.ac.uk/reviews/paper/walton/html - www.h-net.org/reviews/showrev.cgi?path-35951177689428 - http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2242_1675_287/ai_n156 25947 or if that's too much hassle just go to Google and put in inverted commas 'Susan Barton tourism' and you'll get the list of reviews.Belly-dance is my other forte. I dance solo doing a fusion of middle-eastern and western pop styles, perform with Leicester psychedelic band Shapeshifter and am part of the group choreographed by the wonderful Maria d'Silva, 'The Nile Dancers'. A fresh genre I've just moved into is burlesque, mainly because I love the costumes and exagerated cheekiness: a complete parody of myself. Check out some live Shapeshifter videos on Youtube! We're astonishing to say the least!!

You love guy's with a rebelious, devil may care attitude towards everything. Nothing beats long hair and loud music. How ever you're not the only one that thinks so, so keep your guy close. Good luck, you've got your work cut out for you.

My Interests

Arab Dance, I've been at it for over a decade now. Live music, I see live acts about twice a week. History, I'm a social and cultural history specialist and have quite a few publications in that field. Genealogy, I've traced my ancestors back 10 generations to the 1600s, nearly all in Leicestershire, some in Suffolk. Reading, always at it, especially in the bath. Don't like showers, me books get too wet! Wandering in the mountains, especially the Alps. Going to the gym for purely cosmetic reasons, I'm not really sporty although I go several times a week to exercise, swim and sauna.

Angel: Angels are the guardians of all things, from the smallest ant to the tallest tree. They give inspiration, love, hope, and positive emotion. They live among humans without being seen. They are the good in all things, and if you feel alone, don't fear. They are always watching. Often times they merely stand by, whispering into the ears of those who feel lost. They would love nothing more then to reveal themselves, but in today's society, this would bring havoc and many unneeded questions. Give thanks to all things beautiful, for you are an Angel.

Banging and heavy!!! Korn, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pink Fairies, Motorhead, Nine Inch Nails, System of a Down,Iron Maiden, UFO,The Fall, Chemical Brothers, Death in Vegas, The Orb... For more thoughtful moments Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Massive Attack, Nick Cave. Also Hassan Ramzy, Hakim and Arabic street music that I like to dance to. A lot of newer bands like Stressbitch, The Rapture, Kasabian, Enter Shikari and Arcade Fire are impressive too. I've just discovered the Long Blondes, some of the most perceptive lyrics of female experience I ever heard.

Movies:

Dangerous Liaisons with John Malkovitch; Now Voyager; Brief Encounter; Double Indemnity; Strangers on a Train; Bogart in the Big Sleep, Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon; Bride and Prejudice; Life of Brian...

Television:

Sad but true - Coronation Street and East Enders!

Books:

Anything by the Bronte sisters, Thomas Hardy, Emil Zola (my favourite)and Marge Piercy. I like reading Trollope but always forget what the story was about afterwards. It took a long time to realise how humorous Jane Austin's books are but now I do I love them.

Heroes:

I admire anyone who doesn't get carried along in the mainstream. Also anyone whose good at stuff I can't do!!

Over the top with coolness this week!

The last week or so at the Musician has been great. I've seen the Groundhogs, Edgar Broughton Band and John Otway. What was great about these acts was that even though I expected evenings of nostalgic...
