"I love rock and roll with an acoustic, emotional edge which is how I try to write songs," says Roth. "Temptation, salvation, desire and despair are great tools and themes; something I have a lot of experience with..."
Confidently vulnerable with the smack and sigh of tangled emotion, Steve Roth's songs lift and descend through a lava-lamp maze of life's mysteries and incongruities. An equal mix of thoughtful art and pop sensibilities, he unashamedly courts the sacred while flirting with the profane, twisting and re-tooling words and chords into songs that listeners feel and sing along to.
During the late 90's, Roth began building a regional reputation in the northeast as a relentless and committed performer, averaging 3 to 4 gigs a week. His hard work hasn't gone unnoticed. In 2004 he was voted "Top Original Acoustic Solo at the Buffalo Music Awards" and nominated for the same in 2005. He was chosen among the top three Folk/Acoustic Groups in Artvoice's Best of Buffalo 2005 and 2006, and received numerous nominations in the 2005 WNY People's Choice Awards.
Roth has opened for national touring acts such as Poison's Bret Michaels, Nashville acts Jeff Bates and Adam D. Tucker, and L.A. alternative rockers, the Violet Buring. He has also been a featured artist at Goo Goo Dolls' Robby Takac's Music Is Art Festival, the Rock For Food concert to benefit the WNY Food Bank, Music is Art Live @ the Center, and the Taste of Freedom Party, held in Buffalo's historic Central Terminal.
Since 2004, Meredith Brown has been reinforcing Roth's live solo performances with her pure, warm backing harmonies, driving percussion, and quick wit. Whether performing originals or reinventing favorite covers, their musical chemistry layers each song with a full, rich, sonic tapestry of dynamic energy. In 2006 they decided to join forces officially and formed The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter. Their debut "if I should stumble" was released in Fall of 2007.
