The music of Dialia is a traditional sound sung in Madingue, an ethnic language from the Casamance region in the south of Senegal. With a mix of Kora, traditional drums, balafon and vocals, Dialia creates a vibrant sound and message of Senegalese history, respect for ancestors, poverty and education.Dialia was founded in December 1992, when they primarily performed for school programs in Senegal, Gambia and Mali. Now they participate in large festivals throughout Senegal.Alfousseyny Kouyate, the founder of Dialia, descends from the Diabate family, known worldwide as the master Kora players. Holding tight to tradition, the group makes all of their own instruments as they have been made for many years. It is Dialia’s hope that they will carry the tradition of ancient Senegalese music to the next generations, teaching young people the history of traditional instruments and songs as they were played by the ancestors. In a climate of rapid change and adaptation to western standards and cultures, bands like Dialia will ensure the preservation of these inspirational traditions.
