phunknfusion clothing

Finding conscious fashion that caters to the underground house community can be a bit tricky. In a world where home-made CDs, Flyers and stickers rule the Merch tables at house events it can be a challenge finding clothing you connect with. That was of course, until now.
A little company based out of Phoenix, Arizona called "phunknfusion" has been giving the house community just what it needs - a makeover for the mindless tech-head. People lately just can't get enough of their conscious style and in the process phunknfusion has found themselves creating a movement in the underground house culture that has been spreading from Cali to NYC.
There is no special meaning behind their name but is does have a little story attached to it. Phunknfusion was concocted from lyrics from the song by US3 called Cantaloop "Flip Fantasia". There is a lyric in the song that goes "funk and fusion, a fly illusion, keeps ya coastin on the river we cruisin."
Whatever the reason, that line stuck in heads of the company's creators. Being crafty as they are, they took the words "funk" and "fusion" and changed the spelling so it started with a "PH" as an ode to a local hip hop/funk/punk band they loved called the Phunk Junkeez. As the company has gained more recognition, their name has become affectionately shortened to PNF.
The idea behind their line of t-shirts and accessories is that every PNF creation holds a story. Their best selling shirt, the "House Music Souldier" uses Che Gueverra as an iconic representation of the struggles the house community endures as a whole. It represents the endless energy invested into trying to keep weeklies going, even on a profit-loss basis. Soldiers of the house community to phunknfusion were "Souldiers" after investing all of themselves into the underground simply for the love of house music and its community.
What is the story behind Che and what does he have to do with house music? PNF needed people to take notice of how much work went into the underground. Che's image is known around the globe. Through the eyes of punknfusion, he is the ultimate soldier. It wasn't long before PNF decided to breed house music's persistence with Che's soulful image of strength by changing the spelling of the word "soldier" by adding the letter "U." Soon after their signature tee was born.
PNF is a much needed addition to the house family and preserves the underground legacy. These "souldiers" have been through battles to try to get events out of warehouses and into legal venues. They have put themselves on the front line of communication with the public to try to change house's stereotypes floating around in the mainstream that label house as "techno" music. These guys have even overcome financial and geographical obstacles to create a product that can help spread the good word and maybe finally give house music an identity.
Although this group is conscious, they are not too deep for mass consumption. Their roots actually began in Hip Hop making them well aware of the cross-platform underground lifestyle needs. As the little soul brother of underground, PNF noticed that unlike Hip Hop, there were no clothing labels that were giving the attention and love needed to the dedicated house heads. While deciding to represent the soulful sides of house, they have kept their fun and funky, edgy hip hop attitude embedded in every creation. One of their first shirts that simply said "I Know The DJ" was created after they were sitting outside a party watching people say this phrase all night to try to avoid paying the cover. Just a little light-hearted joke for any struggling underground event that everyone can appreciate.
Most people hear about PNF by meeting these guys face to face but lately they are becoming more widely recognized and talked about. Though some of their designs are geared toward house music and hip hop, PNF has consciously tried to appeal and relate to everyone. Some notables that have been caught rocking this label only begin at Little Louie Vega, Masters At Work, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Z-Trip, JoJo Flores, Julius The Mad Thinker, Miguel Migs, The Digable Planets, Jeru The Damaja, and NBA MVP Steve Nash. The Strange Fruit Project has even worn one of their shirts for the making of their video "Pinball".
These guys are out working the grind in the community they represent. In fact, I'm not so sure these guys sleep. They have traveled to the Winter Music Conference in Miami for the past three years to network at one of the world's biggest communication hubs for house music. They always pop up at some event that is about 800 miles from their hometown. I always catch word that they are jumping on board with some new project whether it be a fashion show or a store opening. PNF has friends, family and support in the underground community in all major cities.
These guys are a great company with awesome style, big plans and even bigger hearts. Meet them once and you have a friend for life. If you get the chance to purchase their stuff and take a piece of the story with you, we are that much closer to helping preserve what the house community is really all about - keeping the underground alive by uniting all the stories that create the legacy and then passing it on to the next generation.
