WAKING UP DEAD
It ain..t pretty, but that..s the point. Edited from hundreds of hours of footage filmed over the course of several years, Waking Up Dead is a dark, compelling documentary that contrasts the allure of rock and roll glamour with the perspective of reality. The 90-minute film features drummer Phil Varone and an uninhibited lifestyle that is sometimes amusing, but more often painful to watch through the hurt eyes of his family and friends.
Varone first achieved rock and roll celebrity during the early ..90s with Saigon Kick who had a Top Ten hit single, ..Love Is On The Way, In 2000, he joined Skid Row during a nine month arena tour opening for KISS, ultimately leaving that band four years later to reconcile the conflicts of his life and health.
Although the film addresses different facets of his sex and rock and roll misadventures, the drug aspect of that lifestyle presents by far the most uncomfortable scenes of the film. Phil himself is remarkably candid about that addiction.
How do you help someone whose life is spiraling out of control? Make a movie, and make him come face to face with his own demons.
For a solid four years, Emmy Award winning journalist and filmmaker, Fabio Jafet, documented the seedy underworld of the music business through the eyes of friend, Phil Varone. Jafet reveals what really goes on behind the scenes in a way never captured before on camera. WAKING UP DEAD uncovers the addictions, betrayals and pitfalls on the relentless road to rock stardom.
Everyone has wished for a shot at fame, fortune and a chance to have it all. Better beware of what you wish for .. because nothing comes easy and there is always a price to pay.
