James and Matt met as music composition majors at Rowan University in 1993. The duo first collaborated in 1996 on the short comic opera “September 25th,” which related the experiences of their car accident and a strange trip to the hospital. The hilarious opera, performed for a full house at Rowan, was a great success. After graduation in 1997 James moved to Southern California and earned a Ph.D. in music composition, while Matt stayed in New Jersey and earned two Master’s degrees (one in education and one in music composition.) James began Mansion 11 in Santa Barbara and recorded a self titled EP. James played drums, bass, and rhythm guitar, and was joined by Junar on lead guitar. After a number of years teaching in California and playing with The Hindu Cows and Sheetal, James moved back to New Jersey. Matt and James quickly decided to work together in a reformed Mansion 11. The duo is composing a concept album that draws from a wide range of influences including rock, pop, classical and world music.
