SHRAPNEL -----
For the past three years, at venues across the great state of Texas and beyond, Shrapnel has left an impression on many. They’ve endured tragic hardships and traveled far… each night, launching a sonic assault of progressive metal music on an unassuming audience. Rehearsed, methodical, and often intimidating to those who have never met these rather polite southern gentlemen, Shrapnel introduces each listener to a new breed of metal.
Born and raised in Lubbock Texas, brothers Aaron and Evan Canady teamed up with drummer Greg Stewart and later, bassist Gustavo Calderon, to form Shrapnel. They found their start in Austin, Texas recording their debut album “Revolution in Progress” in the fall of 2004 and releasing it to what would later become an army of loyal fans.
Shortly after the release of “Revolution in Progress”, selected tracks could be heard on Austin’s 101x “No Control” radio program, San Antonio’s Kiss 99.5, and even MTV’s Real World/Road Rules Challenge (The Inferno II). These licensed tracks were also heard throughout the 16th Season of MTV’s Real World, filmed in Austin, Texas. Later that year, Shrapnel was invited to record custom audio loops for the 2005 Ford Mustang Special Edition website created by Classic Soft Trim Inc. These loops featured the Canady brother’s signature guitar sound and gave them an opportunity to record something unusual for this globally recognized brand.
However, the real power of Shrapnel can be witnessed while the band is on stage. Aaron Canady’s vocals effortlessly dance between the hauntingly melodic, and blood curdling screams. Driven by lyrics with devout meaning, one need only assume that each word, sung or screamed, has been purposefully executed. While his larynx flexes wildly, it is easy to forget that this lead vocalist is also laying down a thick bed of heavy guitar riffs; trumpeting complex chords difficult for most guitarists to pull off. Brother Evan Canady is right there too, strategically doubling patterns and winding throughout the arrangement with calculated counter melodies. Often the two brothers meet with low chunking riffs or ear piercing pinch harmonics that make the crowd respond with fists in the air and shouts of approval. The simultaneous occurrence of sharply contrasting and hard-hitting rhythms, make Greg Stewart’s drumming a notable addition to every Shrapnel song. He controls the speed at which odd-time signatures are presented to the audience and the intensity at which sudden stops or changes are delivered. All this is only accented by Gustavo Calderon’s electrifying presence on the bass guitar. Completing the rhythm section with precision, Gustavo carefully, but forcefully, walks through each measure, unleashing frequencies that shake the human eardrum into obedient submission.
Continuing to perform at notable clubs across Texas, Shrapnel is planning multiple tours throughout the East Coast and Midwest in support of their upcoming album, "Torn From Existence" set to release in the fall of 2007. The new album is a 10-song manifesto of epic proportion, co-produced by the Canady brothers and acclaimed Austin engineer Danny Stapleton. Within the confines of its beautifully cryptic packaging these new songs showcase exactly what Shrapnel has to offer to their listeners: something more.
