Experimenter En Couleur produces instruments that create chance combinations of sounds over the time required to play them. This creates new sounds and arrangements and so, new experiences or feelings for the listener.
Chance operations in the making of the instrument and the way the instrument plays its pallete, gives a freeness and experimental nature to the pieces.
Each instrument is grown from seed and so in turn are the musical pieces. In this way the mood can vary as randomly as the natural world whilst still retaining the rhythm of life.
Current projects
Other than progress on the above mentioned musical compositions, I am writing a paper called 'Form, Colour And Time'. The paper analyses the inner dynamics of form,
colour and time in music, with reference to the writings of many notable contemporary artists. View Blog .
Related to 'Form, Colour And Time', a new project of mine is now in full flow to develop a device with which one can paint sound in real time.
This will enable the marking of a digital canvas, to produce abstract films, at the same time playing a sound according to the form and colour frequency of the mark made on the canvas. Thus a musical composition is formed with and from the visual. The process will then be reversed, so performing music will create accurate accompanying visual representations. This will form installation and performance pieces in the future.
The first collaboration for several years has me working with sound artist and improvisor Yan Jun . Well known as music critic,
poet and organizer in Chinas sub-culture scene, they are working together on a site specific piece relating to the 798 Factory/Dashanzi Art Project in Beijing. Further details will be released as the piece progresses.
