About Me

Scanner - British artist Robin Rimbaud traverses the experimental terrain between sound, space, image and form, creating absorbing, multi-layered sound pieces that twist technology in unconventional ways.
From his early controversial work using found mobile phone conversations, through to his focus on trawling the hidden noise of the modern metropolis as the symbol of the place where hidden meanings and missed contacts emerge, his restless explorations of the experimental terrain have won him international admiration from amongst others, Bjork, Aphex Twin and Stockhausen.
Scanner is committed to working with cutting edge practitioners and has collaborated with artists from every imaginable genre: musicians Bryan Ferry, Radiohead and Laurie Anderson, The Royal Ballet and Merce Cunningham and Random Dance companies, composers Michael Nyman and Luc Ferrari, and artists Mike Kelley, Derek Jarman, Carsten Nicolai and Douglas Gordon.
Since 1991 he has been intensely active in sound art, producing concerts, compositions, installations and recordings, the albums Mass Observation (1994), Delivery (1997), and The Garden is Full of Metal (1998) hailed by critics as innovative and inspirational works of contemporary electronic music. In 2004 his Sound Surface work was the first ever Tate Modern sound-art commission and in 2006 he produced Night Haunts for Artangel. whilst sound-designing a new car horn for the USA.
He has performed and created works in many of the world’s most prestigious spaces including SFMOMA USA, Hayward Gallery London, Pompidou Centre Paris, Kunsthalle Vienna, Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, Tate Modern London and the Royal Opera House London. His work has been presented throughout the United States, Asia, Australia and Europe.
He doesn't drink alcohol, tea, coffee, smoke or watch TV but he does have an addiction to white bread and milk, and has kept a diary every day since he was 12 years old, never missing a daily entry.

Any film that moves slowly, makes me want to weep or features unusual narratives, often with Eastern European accents somehow seems to appeal...

Television:

Television has never really appealed but I've been seduced by series like Lost, Twin Peaks, The Office, Kath and Kim, CSI, Alias. Sometimes a little arts show, sometimes the weather, sometimes the news, sometimes music, but otherwise prefer to pass this medium over, unless I'm in a hotel and the alien voices keep me company.

Books:

Writers have meant so much to me in my life, so many writers and so many words on the page. Among those who immediately come to mind are BS Johnson, Harry Matthews, George Perec, Italo Calvino, Derek Jarman, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, John Donne, WB Yeats, Dylan Thomas, Stewart Home, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Robert Lowell, Herve Guibert, Alain de Botton, Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath, Thom Gunn, Donna Tart, Anthony Burgess, Paul Auster...

Heroes:

Heroes are difficult to represent as sometimes they are so personal as to mean nothing to others but figures that has played a very positive role in the shape of my life are undeniably American composer John Cage, German artist Joseph Beuys, American film maker Bruce Conner, and English writer B S Johnson, but in many ways, each day we discover a new 'hero' who offers inspiration and colour to our lives.
