Born in Kane'ohe, on the island of O'ahu (Waikiki is 30 minutes southeast from Kane'ohe for you geography buffs out there), Hawaii, Renn Loa was raised on a truly eclectic variety of music: Everything from bossa novas to the Exotic Sounds Of Martin Denny , Les Baxter and Elvis Presley emanated from the radio.

These were the days when luaus were THE party of choice and tikis were still fun-loving Gods...or at least party kings in attendance of any party worth its weight in dry martinis! Local Hawaiian music could be heard wafting from nearly every club as well as being carried on the winds from surrounding neighborhoods. Roy Orbison, Surf bands and the Doors shared radio airspace with Alfred Apaka, Don Ho, Palani Vaughan, and Aunty Genoa Keawe... ALL of which somehow found their way into Renn's musical collective unconscious and out into his unique music... and voice: RENN does ALL the VOCALS and bird calls on his CD - EVERY harmony, lead and backing vocal is RENN .
Renn would go on to travel throughout the U.S. Mainland, playing and picking up even more regional influences as he went along. Then it was on to Europe and Norway, where he would end up working with many of the most influential and innovative acts such as Magnet, Barbie Bones, Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band, Sondre Lerche, A-HA, Morten Abel, and "Bergen Wave" producers, Yngve Saethre,
and Hans Petter Gundersen . A funny fact for the six degrees of separation crowd; RENN and BLUE HAWAIIANS frontman, MARK FONTANA once were in a band together and Mark was meant to contribute bass and vocals on Renn's project but was on tour FAR from Hawaii at the time... Oh well, NEXT time then! The wondrously talented exotica band, DON TIKI would back him up on his debut which was recorded in Hawaii. The Renn Loa 50th State Of Mind CD features such great musicians as Kit Ebersbach who is a MARTIN DENNY protoge and featured Martin on his the Forbidden Sounds Of DON TIKI debut album. The Renn Loa CD will be released this October 2006 on Provocateur Media.
"
EITHER as a solo act armed only with acoustic guitar or with one of his bands; Renn has opened concerts for - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Rickie Lee Jones, Sheryl Crow, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, the Robert Cray Band A-HA, Jimmy Cliff, The Gin Blossoms, The Go-Gos, The Samples, Peter Case, The Plimsouls, and Unni Wilhelmsen.

Renn has recorded with legendary producers Snuff Garrett (Merle Haggard, Tanya Tucker, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, JJ Cale, Eddie Rabbit, Leon Russell, Burt Bacharach, Don Williams, Conway Twitty, Roger Williams, etc...), Bill Halverson (Jimi Hendrix, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, America, Cream/Eric Clapton, Kraftwerk), and Billy Williams (Lyle Lovett).
A demo CD recorded with Snuff Garrett attracted an offer to fill in for Don Henley on drums and vocals for the proposed Eagles tour in the days before Henley and Glen Frey eventually reconciled their musical differences.
IN ADDITION to his musical efforts Renn has also appeared in the Nils Gaup -directed film North Star (Tashunga in Europe) with Christopher Lambert, James Caan, Burt Young, Catherine McCormack, and fellow Native American actor, Frank Grey Wolf Salsedo (pictured here). His songs have appeared in documentaries and in the massively successful film; "Hawaii, Oslo".
THE LIMITED FIRST EDITION of Renn Loa's "50th State Of Mind" CD (which the samples here are from) is available at amazon.com, towerrecords.com, and tropicaldisc.com .
At one time, Hawaiian music was the most popular music in the United States, outselling all other types of music (classical, jazz, etc.) combined. The influence of the Hapa Haole style was widespread and continues to be felt today. Country and Western Swing steel styles are the direct descendants of the Hawaiian masters like Sol Hoopii, Andy Iona, Dick McIntire, King Bennie Nawahi and many others. The first electric instrument was the frying pan Hawaiian lap steel which opened the door for every electric instrument since. It is in the tradition of these great musicians that Renn Loa & The Aloha Mountain Groove Band PLEASE check out my Aloha Mountain Radio and submit your music in 192kbps Mp3s - IF applicable to the format to: [email protected] wishes to spread the message of International Hawaiianism and Aloha spirit.
