BIOG
Geoffroy is the head of the Mugwump project (a moniker he initiated, initially working with fellow Belgians Spirit Catcher and now pursued with Olivier Grégoire aka Kolombo, his main partner and, at times, with fellow producer Compuphonic) but he's been at the helm of the Belgian house scene since the crazy days of his 8 year long residency at Belgium's mythic Food Club - together with Swirl People's and Aroma's Raoul Belmans, back in the late 90's till the mid-noughties.
He has also directed a series of internationally profiled compilations, including the 4 volumes of the deep/nu-house "Moving House" series on SSR
(www.crammed.be/ssr), that included the burgeoning end-of-the-nineties UK house scene (Idjut Boys/Phil Asher/Faze-Action/Reel Houze/Ashley Beedle...) next to confirmed US house dons (MAW/Mood 2 Swing/Glenn Underground/Ron Trent/Chez Damier...) while also running his 2 own 12' labels, Hi-Phen , on which his other compilations, "Pile-up" 1 & 2 were highly praised in the UK , German and French music press and Suicide (a joint venture/sub-label with the mighty Eskimo imprint from Ghent).
Geoffroy's djing style is pretty eclectic, electronic and surprising, from electronic and modern house grooves to funky or deep techno with, depending on the played parties and clubs, a big dash of cosmic/balearic/disco influenced stuff and forgotten classics while production-wise, Mugwump remains always faithful at one big and simple idea: fusion. Dj's supporting and charting some Mugwump music, so far, have included Sven Vath, DJ Naughty, Ivan Smagghe, Pete Herbert, Ewan Pearson, Mike Monday, Jef K, Chris Duckenfield, Steve Kotey, Damian Lazarus, MANDY, Kiki, Andy Weatherall or Serge from Clone, to name but a really few...
After 4 singles on Suicide and the short-lived Mugwump Trax label (trough NEWS), Mugwump's latest releases are the "Memory Lane Refund" 12' on Berlin's Mood Music, run by Sasse/Freestyle Man and "Boutade" on Ewan Pearson's Misericord imprint, the latter getting huge critical acclaim and dj support. (Rave reactions from Andy Weatherall, Optimo, Dixon, Chateau Flight, Prince Language, Pete Herbert, Ivan Smagghe, Ata and Sasse). Next up is "Yajna"on Rob Mello's Disco 45 imprint (already big with Michaël Mayer, Ben Watt, Ewan Pearson and Will Saul) and a just-released remix (Beatport only) on new French label, Brown Eyed Boyz music which is getting great support from Will Saul, James Flavour and King Roc right now.
Geoffroy is also running his night, "Flesh" at the Brussels mythic Fuse Club ( recently quoted as one of the 50 best clubs in the world in Mixmag and I-DJ), with recent guests Âme, Will Saul, Sasse, Danton EEprom, Paul Virgo, C-Rock (Motorcitysoul) & James Flavour (Dirt Crew). Next Flesh parties at Fuse are scheduled with London's Secretsundaze and Misericord honcho Ewan Pearson.

Misericord 002 / MUGWUMP - BOUTADE
"So, it's time for Misericord release number two. Hot on the heels of Al Usher's mighty "Gnanfou", Mugwump deliver their finest work to date I reckon, a 107BPM club monster (for us Balearic grandads this is not a contradiction in terms, kids) called "Boutade". It may be slow but it's already proving massive with the likes of Ivan Smagghe, Ata and Pete Herbert. Marcato strings and timpani build the drama until a massive bassline drops and everyone goes nuts. it's our belgian friends geoffroy and kolombo aka mugwump, and -forgive me for sounding a bit soppy here - it's been one of the tracks that's given me the most joy during 2007. i think i've played it nearly every set since geoffroy first sent it and the reactions have been amazing from punters and other djs alike. it's 107 bpm balearic / trancey disco, with a heavy heavy bassline reminiscent of trevor jackson's remix of chromeo from a couple of years back. don't let the speed fool you. this is not a chill-out record. it's a monster... On the flip, myself, Sasse and Naughty turn in a chugging Prescription-esque dub for good measure. If you have the guts / sense to change the pace a bit you will be mightily rewarded. Once again, it comes in a beautifully- sleeved vinyl-only limited run too. Slowly, surely! " Ewan Pearson (Misericord)
Excellent reviews in I-DJ, DJ, GO, XLR8R, Skinny, Go, Resident Advisor
Radio Plays on Flomotion, RTM, Dinamo Fm
Heavy DJ support from Andy Weatherall, Optimo, Gilb'r, Tiefschwarz, Pete Herbert, Nathan-Gregory Wilkins, Morpheus, Will Saul, Ben Watt, Dixon, Âme, Jef K, Ivan Smagghe, Prince Language, Toby Tobias, Chris Duckenfield and reviews/mentions all over the usual blogs.
Already compiled on Optimo's mix for Sub Club's 20th b-day (Soma), Fred Deakin's "Nu Balearica" comp (Ministry of Sound) & "Bloom music vol 2" (Bloom) by Cosy Mozzy (Dirty Dancing).
Nathan-Gregory Wilkins: "One of my favourites since Ewan sent it to me.Truly wonderful. Will dutifully go and buy on vinyl over the next few days. Well done."
Piccadilly records, Manchester: " OK, prick up your ears, I will tell you this but once. We have a bomb, and not only that it seems we have a proper good label that (if we whisper it) we may be able to rely on. The last record that came as the debut for Miserichord was Al Usher's "Gnanfou" a total bomb and big seller here at PHQ. Now the second release on the label is this EP by Mugwump. "Boutade" comes in two versions the Original on side-A is a brilliant piece of midtempo house / disco with an absolutely killer string bit, super solid beats slugging away beneath a killer bassline and proggy synth sounds, all before the piano breakdown! Over on side-B the "Miseridub" which supercharges the elements from the original and turns in a slightly more DJ friendly version, however both sides are total killer, this will be big!!! "
Keith Optimo " "Awesome" is one of the most over / mis used words of our age, but this really is awesome."
Dixon "love this track"
Gilb'r (Chateau Flight) "really really good. will play it for sure!"
Pete Herbert "love them both. 'Tis a monster indeed..."
Prince Language "they are both really gorgeous. Especially loving the dub. Played them out and they sound amazing."
I-DJ / House (Jez Torrance) : "All too irregular they maybe be, but I love Mugwump releases and their delightfully non cynical dance music... give its somptuous orchestral strings and lowdown analogue bassline the right airing and realise 107 bpm ain't too slow..."
I-DJ / Eclectic (Matt Anniss) : "We're slightly slow on this but its so ace we tought we'd make you aware of it anyway. Mugwump look to the Balearics for inspiration. the result is a shimmering slice of 107 BPM e-disco - all bubbly synths, evocative strings and lush piano breakdowns. Wonderful. flip for Ewan Pearson, Sasse & Naughty's Misericord dub, which add cowbells and some well-placed bleeps and blips for maximum dancefloor pleasure. an essential purchase basically"
Philip Sherburne (Resident Advisor/Lan) :†Where earlier Mugwump releases for the likes of Moodmusic have reflected a lush, melodic electro-house sensibility, ’Boutade’ is in keeping with Misericord's slow-disco aesthetic, clocking in at a churning 107BPM. With over two minutes of intro, Mugwump take their time digging in, but it's hardly wasted: fluttering violins, channeling the nervous energy of Philip Glass, cushion dramatic string vamps and methodical tympanis that stretch the tension to breaking point. The same simplicity rules the rest of the tune, which is built on a fat, jaunty bassline and a plucked lead ruffling its peacock feathers. Instead of development, Mugwump follow contours in the sound, focusing their energies on judicious filtering and the sneaky rearrangement of the song's principal themes. The B-side is a similarly-paced edit by Pearson, Sasse and Naughty that zeroes in on ’Boutade’s moments of peak intensity and draws them out in a glorious smear of filters and filigree with cowbell-heavy Latin percussion and lazy handclaps chunking up the rhythm nicely. It's the perfect, starry-eyed complement to Mugwump's languid ecstasy.â€
Record Mania: “First out on Misericord was the best-selling Al Usher EP - anyone who loved that as much as I did needs to check this. Midpaced electronic disco with dramatic strings and a great build-up. Dub mix on flip. »
Alek: "Daddy did it supa well...can't wait do drop it at my next gig really! Killa !!! Daddy, let me hug you again, you're the man...."
