About Me

In my early teens, in Gentle Giant's dressing room, post-gig in Manchester's Free Trade Hall, I fell in love. Inches away in it's open flight-case was Ray Shulman's sunburst Fender Precision bass. Fat strings, deep browns, blacks and ambers and a seductive glossy sheen. I was smitten, besotted and lost to all hope.Years later I had my own seductress. A cherry-red Wal bass that growled, gargled and spit with the best of 'em. I was playing funk-punk-jazz with Pinski Zoo, trying to find a balance between James Blood Ulmer and Jean Jacques Burnel by way of John Entwistle. I'm still looking.Good times with The Howdy Boys and Popland have followed, searching for the perfect hook, the aching melody, the heartbreaking chord change and the arch lyric. Still looking. Still hoping.
