It's often been said in the music industry that you have your whole life to make your first record and six months to create your second. But as an independent artist with no boundaries, the pressure comes only from within; a pressure far grittier and focused than any outside influence. Particularly in the mind of Scott Hinkson – a true artist carved over time out of determination, passion and raw talent - an artist who is striving to trump himself with every project that enters his periphery."My goal is to become somewhat of a prolific artist, whether working on my own material or others, I'd like to be involved in a project every year or so," says Hinkson. "I do it because I love music and believe in the music that I am creating. The challenge is to bring to life the concept of a song that I have in my head, if not exceed it."A producer who mixes and engineers his own projects and those of other artists, Hinkson's vision has always been on his own songwriting and performing career. Blending intuitive alternative rock with clever twists of pop melody, his sound conjures up roaring power, extraordinary vulnerability and haunting hooks that will make your head swim and your heart ache. Combined with a production style of considerable depth and texture, Hinkson's songs stand alone, cutting a swath through the din of mainstream radio and sinking their teeth into an audience that never saw him coming. While generating material for his first solo album, Hinkson released the 2003 instrumental soundtrack "Music for the Short Film 'Man Alone'", "...a very austere, moving collection of pieces that takes the listener along the meandering return from a personal abyss" (Stylus Magazine). "Your stomach will knot and relax with the twists and turns" of an ethereal masterwork which drew critical success and established Hinkson as an artist with much on the horizon. In late 2005 Hinkson released his debut solo effort, "Tracking Outside In", "an album which seemingly came out of nowhere like a fully formed diamond" (Chart Magazine). Darryl Sterdan of the Winnipeg Sun called it "...one of the more varied and intriguing solo sets we've heard lately. The ear-catching production invests these songs with layers and textures that elevate them far beyond the usual bedroom-fi diary musings".
The start of 2006 also brought Hinkson commercial and non-commercial radio support as Hinkson garnered college and mainstream radio play across Canada on the strength of "his brilliantly catchy first single 'Everything Solo'" (Chart Magazine) and "lightly fuzzy pop rocker ‘Lately’” (Winnipeg Sun). Stations such as CHFQ – Freq 107.1, CHIQ – Q94.3, Café 100.7 FM, CJUM – 101.5 UMFM, CKUW – 95.9 FM, CJGL- 94.1 The Fox, CKMS – 94.5 U of Waterloo (charted in Feb ’06), and CJUV – Sunny 94.1 proudly flew the flag - playing up to 20 to 30 spins a week.
After an incredibly packed CD release turnout at Winnipeg's Pyramid Cabaret in February 2006, Hinkson encountered even more success supporting the album with several live festival and club performances throughout the spring/summer including Freq 107’s “Made in Manitoba” music festival, the River City Dragon Boat Festival, and the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Whether playing alone in an intimate setting or accompanied by a backing band, Hinkson is the axis upon which the music turns, often incorporating loops and unique tunings to enhance his live creations in the vein of Feist and Joseph Arthur.Presently, Hinkson is toiling away in the studio again, hard at work on his second album - "a darker, more subversive affair" tentatively scheduled for a mid 2008 release. During this time, a legion of followers will continue to build, his polished live presence will impress audiences and an exploration of TV/Film licensing opportunities and a beneficial management, publishing, and/or distribution/label arrangement for future ventures will continue.Scott Hinkson is that rarest of finds. A career artist in the making, Hinkson is answering a call that even he doesn't understand...his motivations mysterious, obsessive, gut-wrenching, beautiful and unforgettable.Recent discography and accolades:As Scott Hinkson - In July 2006, Hinkson earned a songwriting award in May 2006 for his song “Lately” via the "Song of the Year” songwriting contest Song_Of_The_Year-Scott_Hinkson_Award .- Tracking Outside In (2005) - (Songwriter, Performer, Producer, and Recording/Mix/Mastering Engineer)- Music for the Short Film "Man Alone" (2003) - (Songwriter, Performer, Producer, and Recording/Mix/Mastering Engineer)Other Projects - SERENA POSTEL “Spare Change” (2006) - (Producer, Performer, and Recording/Mix/Mastering Engineer)- SNOOPER “Under the Radar” (2004) - (Co-Songwriter, Producer, Recording/Mix/Mastering Engineer, Bass Guitar, and Backing Vocals)
