The New Quartet (TNQ) was founded march 2005, after a small loft session in an unfinished building somewhere in Tilburg. That afternoon, Joris Posthumus and Jurriaan Dekker found what they had been looking for all along; a kick-ass jazz band!
The music of TNQ can best be discribed as nu-bop; their sound is tight and loaded, the music is raw and heavy… No fancy arrangements, just strong, melodic songs played by a dynamic band. No nonsense!!
For the last two years, TNQ have been the host of their own jazz evening at the 013 Popcentre in Tilburg. "The New Quartet meets..." was designed in the summer of 2005 to attract new people and try to interest them for jazz. TNQ produced the evening with their partners in crime; Muzieklab Brabant and 013. The format was simple but effective: a new, young band opened the evening after which TNQ hit the stage and played with a special guest. The Rundfunk dj’s spinned the wheels and completed the evening by playing in between events.
In the first year, TNQ invited several respected Dutch jazz musicians like Martijn Vink, Angelo Verploegen, Wolter Wierbos and Tobias Delius. The evening was a hit, and TNQ, Muzieklab and 013 decided to proceed in a new and improved format. And so "The New Quartet invites..." came of the drawingboard for 2007... The changes were slim but subtle and effective.
Great bands like Monsieur Dubois, Captain Hook and Susanne Alt Quartet played at "The New Quartet invites...", and TNQ itself was joined by Ben van der Dungen, Martin Verdonk and Yuri Honing. Again, the evening was a big success, and now the aim is to spread the word and find other stages...
Meanwhile, TNQ is going full speed ahead, as they proved to be a band for the future. You would see them on the most awkward places.., for a jazzband... Whether it was a party, a popfestival, a jazzclub or a community house, TNQ astounded the audience with their perfect mix of melody and energy, and showed that jazz certainly is alive; and KICKING!!!
