We are the music makers - the dreamers of dreams

About Me

I'm still working on putting this page together; currently recording some stuff to upload.
I'm really a closet songwriter who keeps toiling because I believe in my potential.
My confidence is building and I'll come out when I'm ready.
We each have a destiny.
LIFE IS ALL ABOUT TIMING
My dad was a musician. Played guitar and he sang like Perry Como. He and his brother played in "beer joints" when they were kids to help feed the fatherless family during the depression. He played in a combo when I was little.
[Added 2-1-07... I recently found some old 78s of my dad's recordings and was stunned to learn he had written so many songs.
So in shock I never knew.]
I have been singing and playing something since I can remember. Starting banging on things to accompany my dad on his green Gretsch. He bought me bongos when I was 5ish. Get this: they wouldn't let me play drums in school band. "Girls dont play drums." Played clarinet. Gave that up long ago! Piano lessons as a kid for a couple of years. Was frustrating though, because I hated learning to read music. Was easier to play by ear.
Love to sing more than anything else. Been singing my whole life since my dad taught my brother, sister, and me to harmonize. Church choir in grade school. High school choir, etc. Played piano and sang for my family and friends since. Wrote poetry. In high school started writing songs on the piano.
Bought a guitar when I was 19. Self taught. Learned songs of the day on the guitar that I wanted to sing. The first was "Landslide" then "4 and 20." Feel head over heels for Joni Mitchell. Got really into alternate tunings. Made playing the guitar with these short stubby fingers much easier, and I could concentrate more on vocals. Plus, my range fits Jonis. Started writing songs on my Takamine shortly thereafter.
My brother and I played the small town upper middle class lounge scene for about 2 years in the early 80s. Was writing more songs on the piano then, too. My dad taught my brother to play the Uke as soon as he could hold it. He eventually picked up a guitar and has played day and night ever since. Also plays drums, bass, and keys. So, big time thank yous to MY BROTHER for ALWAYS playing his guitar, for "coming through like gang busters," and for encouraging me when I bought my first guitar.
My mom, dad, sister, brother, and me. We all played the piano. So, I grew up with singing and a guitar and/or piano being played in the house almost constantly. And, records, of course!
Sang on the worship team at church for about 15 years during my 'wife and mom' phase. One of the drummers left, so I moved over and played percussion, with my son on the set. Talk about some of the best years of my life! He was 16. Did that for about 5 years.
A few years ago I started going to open mics in my town, playing my guitar and singing. Backed up others with vocals and percussion. Was asked to play percussion in a new band. Did that for about a year when it became obvious we were a "Dead" cover band, so I left. Don't want to be in a cover band. Especially a 'dead'one going no where. Nice guys, though. Still friends. myspace.com/theotherunit
Presently concentrating on perfecting all the songs Ive written over the last few years. Making a demo for a studio. Want to record something top quality. Not for distribution, just for my own pleasure. A journal. Chronology. Occasionally go to an open mic here and there. If the right people came along, Id jump on board and have a blast gigging.
Btw, I'm not bad. But, I'm not what I would define as really, really, really good. My best gift is the ability to communicate during the performance. Do a lot of improv. Makes recording excruciating! At my best as a supportive musician particularly back up vocals. LOVE to harmonize and make fun sounds with all my toys!
I'm a big time networker. Comes naturally. I'll talk to just about anyone no matter what they look like. I know people... have friends in low places and friends all the way to the top.... those uncomfortable talking to the 'weird' looking people in low places... those who avoid the people that look normal. (Whatever that is.)
People are people, to me.

Rudyard Kipling
If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Musicians... Best put by JOSHUA RADIN ,
"musicians who know that lyrics are just as important as melody..."

*Greatest influences include MY Dad for his music 'Genes' and for teaching my sister, brother, and me how to harmonize. And for giving me bongos when I was 5ish. BIG TIME thank yous to MY BROTHER for ALWAYS playing his guitar, for "coming through like gang busters," and for encouraging me when I bought my first guitar.

And My Oldest Son for banging on anything that made noise from the time he figured out he could move his hands, then at the age of 16, giving the best percussion advice I have ever received: "Just do what no one else would."

+++On January 6th 2006, a press release announced that the body of BARRY COWSILL was discovered on December 28th on a wharf in New Orleans. Local authorities believe that the 51 year old Barry died in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which hit the city on August 29th, 2005. He had reportedly left phone messages for his sister SUSAN on September 1st, and was not heard from again.+++More bad news came on February 17th, 2006, just after a memorial service for Barry, when the family learned of the death of their 58 year old brother, BILL, who had been battling emphysema, osteoporosis and other ailments.+++
